I would agree for the most part, but in our area of the country we don't worry much about the excess proteins in forages as they're burned for energy. Being a big molecule they're not burned as efficiently as a carbohydrate, so I wouldn't recommend protein as an energy source. NRC guidelines say 10% protein is adequate for mature horses in most any stage of work, but often our protein sources are incomplete amino acids. While I do agree that long fiber roughages are optimal for digestive health, you don't have to have long fibers to be successful. Look at all the horses that thrive on Senior-only diets. And I totally agree with you on the difficulty of getting them to eat enough forage. Sometimes they just won't, and you have to go to concentrates. Going as high as 50% of the ration is risky, but it looks like you have that well under control. Ya gotta do what you gotta do.
