I am no longer a serious pole bender, but I find it a very useful exercise to teach finesse--just a LITTLE turn, followed by another. Getting the poles set right is always a hassle since the wind blows them down, etc. My ground is not worked up, it is a grass arena and part of the pasture to facilitate the mowing process. That way, the ground is usable spring and fall. If I worked it up, spring and fall would not be times I could use the arena. Anyway.... Today, I got out my string with the knots 20 feet apart. I stretched it out where I wanted the poles to be. Then I used marker paint to paint the location of each pole on the ground. Now, all I have to do is set the pole on the paint mark and they will be evenly spaced AND in a straight row.

Poles - my mare HATED pole bending. I finally understood/heard her dislike when she stiffened her head/neck and ran them all down one day. Clover leaf and straight way were fine, just NO poles!

Sounds like your mare was a little bit opinionated LOL. This would work for anything that had to be a certain distance apart.
