I will try to get new pics tomorrow. No pockets no phoneunless I remember to bring out a fanny pack thingy.
I guess it was 4 wks. ago when I hired Carol, the BO's sister, the begin training Joy. Carol is very experienced with all things horse handling. She is a vet tech with 18 yrs. equine experience, and has trained lots of babies. So at 3 wks. old, Joy began halter training. She had to be caught arms around chest & bum as you all described. She was not happy with the process for more than the first week and we had to begin each lesson from the very beginning. Think "50 First Dates!" She did make progress with each lesson. After 2 weeks of lessons a few times per week, she finally got comfortable enough to willingly put her nose into the halter!
Carol led, taught Joy to step back and over, and to pick up all 4 feet easily. She seeks out people now wanting tons of hands-on attention. She's all over me while I groom Flicka, mouthing my shirt, pants, arms, etc, and I'm always aware that one day she'll bite me. I have just begun teaching "over" really meaning it, now every time to get her out of my space. She learns quickly...but still comes right back! Today I began picking up and holding her feet, which she does not love. I can also move her around in a half circle in both directions, sort of pivoting on her fronts.
Today I also began moving feet separately, forward and back. She learned that so fast! She's very calm and loves being "scrubbed" all over with several different brushes. She stands very still even untied. To my knowledge, she has never been tied. She will still startle a lot at things near her eyes, so I'm working on desensatizing her eyes.
Joy has turned into a little babydoll! She's sweet and friendly, and even whinnies to me when Flicka does when they first hear me call. She's growing in height and mass. I'm 5'5" tall, and her back is only about 6" below my armpit. I saw growth after the 10 days I was absent for vacation & the weekend. She eats hay and grain, and gets plenty of milk from Flicka. Ugh, while I wason vacation last week, Flicka came into heat and was miserable. Her tail was a huge mess and her bum and below was very icky and raw/sore. I'm doing my best to keep her very clean back there.
So, I can still ask Carol for more training help, but for $$ purposes, I'm planning on going it alone now. Can you guys suggest a training course or method so I'll know what to train in proper order? I meed to know everything about training tying safely. I have found that Joy is so small and sensative still, that it takes only one finger pressure to move her in any direction. Anyway, she is adorable and fun now!
