Did my second endurance ride last weekend. Keet couldn't go so I went by myself. Still doing intros because completing an endurance ride requires a pace of about 5 mph and I can't even do 4 1/2 mph for 10 miles. LD's are 25 - 30 miles and then the true endurance rides are 50 miles and up. Pics from my trip: Shiloh didn't eat or drink well during the trip. He eats more when Holly is with him. We rode about 6 miles on Saturday and did the 10 mile intro on Sunday. He got all As after finishing the intro. Shiloh turns 20 this month!! The vet was out today to do Lucky's teeth. He still had his wolf teeth, but they are gone now. His teeth weren't "terrible" and are all OK now. He had a wound from a dog attack on his shoulder that was still not totally healed when I got him. It healed, but as he lost his winter coat, it looked worse and worse with pieces of skin w/ hair sticking out, etc. So the vet prettied it up - but it doesn't look pretty right now. She had to remove a large hunk of skin because it was growing at the wrong angle. Later he will look better. For now, hydrotherapy and ointment every day until it heals.

Beautiful pictures. Sure wish I was brave enough to start doing intro's or a small endurance ride. Maybe once the kids are all grown and I don't spend so much of my time running them all over. LOVE Shiloh

WooHoo. You rock Dorothy.
I'm thinking I'll have to only do the fun ride on Tanza if I make it to the Llano Estacado ride in June at all. I'm still keeping distance short and not going over a trot out on the trail to make sure I don't stress his mind too much. I'd need a buddy to go farther or faster and I'm not enough of a networker to get that so it will just have to be the slow road for us.
Plus he needs to gain weight, I whiffed that this winter having him with the fast eaters and erring too much on side of growing horses will be a bit thin.

I'm still only doing slow rides also. I do canter a decent amount, but also do a lot of walking.
Riding with the girl last weekend, I calculated that I only did 3.6 mph overall. The last 3.32 miles of the 10 miles we were solo and did 3.9 mph. He still had enough in him at the end that he would canter if I asked him to. That was good news since we had done 5.8 miles the day before. At the ride before that, he wore himself out before we started and didn't have a canter left in him the last few miles.
If you end up being able to go, maybe we can ride together some. If Tanza has a "fastish" trot, Shiloh can canter at the same speed. He isn't a huge fan of trotting a lot. I am still doing intros, not LD.
Also, I really liked just going out on my own the afternoon that most people did "real rides". He was over the excitement of everyone leaving and we were on our own other than being passed three times by really nice riders. One asked if I was OK because I got off trail and stopped as they were approaching, so I told them that I was just getting out of the way so they could pass.

Thanks Dorothy. Tanza does have a pretty big trot I think. He also has a nice canter, I'm just not using that gait when riding out yet. I don't want too much speed or adrenalin out on the field roads until we have more shared miles.

I have to ask- don't the stirrup leathers pinch your bare thighs? You look so comfortable in shorts, I'm amazed. I don't even like riding bareback in shorts.

Frosty, if you look at the stirrup leathers, they are covered with sheepskin Distance Depot sells sheepskin covers. I would be miserable without them. Ride4Fun - if I don't wimp out, you can trot while I canter - but my average speed for the ride will probably be under 4 mph I probably won't start with a group - at least the first day. I go out later after things (and Shiloh) have calmed down. You are welcome to ride with me and then leave me if you wish.

I like the way you are looking where you are going instead odf watching to make sure Shiloh's ears aren't falling off. And, WOW, what a beautiful horse!
