I did my first ballroom competition in 2 years and I danced a total of 53 heats.
It was a local, 1 day event. Not too shabby!
36 - 1st places
9 - 2nd places
7 - 3rd places
I took top Silver level student AND best showcase number!
The morning was Smooth. I dance 22 heats - Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Walts in several levels of Silver and then I did the same by dancing down an age group. I had problems plugging in, but I gave it as much power as I could knowing it would be choppy. (HOWEVER I have been off working my smooth dances for 4 months! We only worked on smooth for 2 weeks and the last 2 practes were pretty rough.) I had 12 back to back heats and I nearly lost my cookies. I found Ruthie and asked her to turn the air down on the dance floor, it was like a sauna!
I pretty well knew what to expect of my scholarship in American Smooth so I just danced it and had fun. Scholarships are dancing for cash prises. You are dancing agains all ages, guys against the gals and all levels of dance (Bronze, Silver and Gold) David and I don't have any corrigraphed entrances to our dances yet. It was still a good marker of what all I need to work on.
One of our team mates is a massage therapest. She came and worked the heat book keeping David, Debbie and myself on the dance floor with what we were dancing and the levels we were dancing and making sure to pull us off as well. I don't know how David managed dancing 103 heats with us! In American Rhythm he came off the floor maybe 5 times. At least the music guy held up a few heats while David towled off, got a sip of water and back on the floor again.
I am so shocked and pleased that I took ALL 1st places in my Rhythm heats!!! I was REALLY worried that in the end I had a really long back to back run of heats - 18 of them!! I told David I was thinking of scratching a few, he told me I was NOT going to do that! The cold ballroom really helped!! I am SO thankful that David won the "argument" about the salsa heats. I HATE salsa, I find it repetitive. THAT saved my bacon! I WAS going to switch it up with more hustle, but something said to leave it be. My salsa heats were where I could take a breather and not work as hard.
SO in Rhythm I danced: Meringue, Cha Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Bolero, Mambo, Samba, East Cost Swing, West Coast Swing and Hustle.
The only thing left off the list is American Paso Doble. I started to learn that Tuesday night.
I'll go to my FB page and copy the links to a few photos.
