Hubby and I are going to a fancy work party tomorrow night (well, I guess technically tonight since it's after midnight). I found my outfit, just have to hem the pants. They are a sparkly chiffon fabric over a silky liner. I've been looking at tutorials to do a rolled hem and I don't think it will be a problem - the liner is a good length, it's just that the chiffon is too long by a couple of inches. I guess I'll do that tomorrow afternoon.
Tonight I worked on hubby's slacks. He has some nice dress fine wool slacks he got a couple of years ago. But they are a little tight in the waist - he was going to try wearing his shirt out but that just won't fly. I took a look, there's plenty of room to let them out (he only needs another inch in the waist). I suggested he try them on a couple of weeks ago and have a tailor let them out. No, no, he'd be ok. As time has gone by, he's coming up with all kinds of (weird) ideas to wear them without altering them. Last week, I finally resigned myself to doing the work myself. I measured him tonight, it was like pulling teeth to do that but we got that done. The pants were constructed with teeeeeny stitches and they used a lock-stitch on that seam - took forever to pick out. Finally got enough of it opened up to try it on hubby to be sure of how much to take it in. I turned them inside out so I could pin the new seam allowance once he put them on. OMG you'd thought I asked him to fly to the moon! He insisted pants could not be put on inside out and I told him my sis and I did it all the time. Once he got them mostly on, I did up the zipper and fastenings because of course the rear seam was opened. Oh No! you can't do that either! LOL he is a pretty silly guy. Finally we got them on, pulled up, shirt tucked in, and I was able to pin the waist and make sure I could blend that into the lower part of the rear seam.
They came out pretty well, I spritzed some water on the old seam to relax the threads as the old seam holes were visible. After rubbing it a little and blotting with a towel, they look pretty good.
My godmother used to sew for the opera as well as made all her suits and dresses and so did my mom, plus she made our good clothes when we were kids, thank heavens I learned how to sew and alter!
I think I'm going to go ride first thing in the morning!
