I'm hoping the aging knees and legs will cooperate. Feels fine when I'm going but then the knee cap protests more than usual going up stairs the next day etc. But getting outside and away from people in the middle of the office day is part of the enticement for me, I don't know that I'd use a gym, having to make a special trip there and all that, just doesn't fit my personality and schedule.
I also bought a book "Anatomy of Stretching", 2nd edition I think. Decided that I don't want to mess with a Dr co-pay every time I have some issue that specific stretching might help. I should have gotten the paper version so it would be easier to skip to specific sections but its a great resource for me.

I was having knee and ankle aches and pains and Advil or whatever just wasn't cutting it, and I couldn't ice everything! I mentioned it during my physical and my Dr put me on Celebrex. The back of my heel was quite swollen and painful, I had to wear backless shoes or go up a size - and the Celebrex helped that too - I didn't realize it was arthritis.

Good for you! It is VERY important to do an exercise that fits you. I'm not a jogger, I tried many times to take it up and just could never stick with it. Once I had my herniated discs, it just isn't even a possibility any more. I can imagine that getting out of the office is very rewarding.

I've been told that jogging isn't all that good an exercise for those of us who are . . . err . . . more mature. ;-) It really puts a lot of stress on knees, etc. It was my aerobic exercise of choice but after both my Dr and sports nutritionist advised against it, I decided to go another route. I've been using my elliptical and want to add walking, plus I've started doing some Zumba.

Funny- my dr endorses running and encouraged me to do it. I dont have any pain anywhere and am in reasonably good shape. I am coaching a training program for kids to get them ready for a 10k run and i figured i better start too! I walk an average of 5 miles a day and my bmi is 23. i dont want to lise weight but feel i could tone up a bit.

I think it all has to do with your personal fitness level and personal body make-up. My dad used to run EVERY DAY. Now he is close to 80 and doesn't have any knee or hip problems. He has heart problems and COPD, but those are not nearly as bad as they would be on someone else because his heart is so very strong and his lung capacity is so huge that when they are not working at their peak, they are still good enough. On the other hand, my mom has never been one for exercising. She always used to be active, but she can't do regular exercise. She is paying for that now!

I was at a speaker event a couple weeks ago. The speaker was a 73year old tri-athlete. Not only does he do the tri but he pushes, pulls and bikes his 51 year old quadrapelegic son through all of it! He was pretty amazing. he competed in 50 triatholons, marathons or races his past year. He was planning on making this past Boston marathon his ladt Boston but decided on one more year because of the bombings there last year. i figure if he can do all of that, surely i can run 10k, right? We'll see but im going to try. Both of my kids have done the 10k for y ears and ive walked it. this year i hope to run it too!

Long as the knees don't complain go for it. But speed walking can give you the workout without the concussion. Good shoes can make a HUGE difference. And yeah. Got to love the workout or you won't stick with it. If they had had a pool the last time I joined the gym I would have been thinner a long time ago.

Good shoes make a huge difference. I went to a place that specializes in running/walking shoes. They do a gait analysis and then make a recommendation based on individual support needs

I'm hoping the aging knees and legs will cooperate. Feels fine when I'm going but then the knee cap protests more than usual going up stairs the next day etc. R4F - I have the weakest knees possible!!! I've got loser ligaments from diving on them for so many yrs playing volleyball. My personal trainer has been working with me since the end of November to build up their strength. I also wear the drug store knee braces for extra support. It does not take much for me to tweak a knee and have it yell. Mostly when I try and do something on my toes when I'm suppose to be staying on my heels. I'm also taking glucosamine every day and that helps. I love it now I can walk up stairs and not have to pull myself up by the rails. I'm also no longer huffing when I get to the top! I'm pushing about 75 lbs on most of leg machines or more. Oh and a few times there while walking the stairs I've had to call it quites before I finished my reps because a knee cap shut me down for the day. That rarely happens now. Keep up the good work!

I got myself a bike. Now for the weather to get nice so I can use it. I went on a bike ride with a local bike club. I was worried when they told me it was 11 miles. But I guess the swimming has worked because it was easy. And REALLY fun. I have to say more fun than riding Shadow with others.

Sadly my own exercising did not continue. Shortly after I posted that, my sinuses started acting up and I didn't want to be breathing hard and sucking any gunk in deep into pockets where an infection might form. Finally this Thursday I woke up with sinus pain after having gradually ratcheted the decongestants, sinus rinsing, muxinex etc as high as possible with OTC products not exceeding recommended doses.
So I went to the Dr. and got a prescription for antibiotics and recommendation to continue the decongestant and mucus thinning regimen as well. I'll probably try to use the elliptical at work once I start feeling better to reduce my pollen exposure.

I have a nasal wash bottle and do rinse my nose at least daily, 2x/daily when allergens seem to be thick. 3 years ago when I had a sinus infection and was referred to an allergist when regular antibiotics didn't kick it he said he did not recommend using neti pot for people like me with chronic rhinitis cuz some saline would remain and be a ripe environment for infection.
So I just rinse my nose and don't try to do a neti routine with full sinus flush and water draining out the other nostril. I don't get normal allergy symptoms with itchy eyes and a lot of nasal drip, I just get extra stuffiness.
On the exercise front I've been doing a lot of half? squats pulling cheat grass out of mom's oversized flowerbeds that I had neglected since early summer 2013.

That counts. I did some weeding and mowing the other day and yes its really hard exercise. I start coughing badly when I don't use my neti pot. I get that post nasal drip crud.
