NOW I understand! I didn't know enough before to understand the explanation. I have two TVs connected to the Internet. One is "Smart" and the other is a high-school dropout large-screen high definition that is connected via the Bluray player. If you are in the "buying" mode--take a hint and shell out the extra few bucks for the "smart" model.
If you get a Smart TV, and you sign up for Netflix, all you do is turn on the TV, select Netflix, and Netflix comes on. The TV registered ITSELF for your Netflix account via the Internet.
If you are connecting via a Bluray player, you will get a message on the TV screen, sending you to the Netflix site, with a code to put into the "activate" box. I am assuming that you have to do this for each of your services that you have an account and password for. You will have to go to Amazon, to Pandora, etc. It isn't the end of the world, but it sure is different than signing up and using the "Smart" TV.
Of course, it is much easier now that I finally registered my Sony Bluray on their website---a feat in itself. I only spent about an hour with customer chat. That is what I get for buying an older model from Walmart. The instructions were for outdated web access URLs. But, finally done.
If you don't need the new TV, then, of course, connect with a cable to your Bluray/DVD player. But, if you have to buy a new TV anyway....
One more thing. If you have DISH. HDTV will ONLY work on TV1--the TV closest to the receiver. The signal is downgraded to go to TV2--the TV farther away. So, when the install guy asks you which TV you watch the most, what he is REALLY saying is "Which TV do you want to have high-definition capabilities?". The details are on page 14 of the DISH guide. It just isn't nearly as clear. I actually called them and asked them if this is what it means--and they said, "Yes."
So much for your electronics lesson of the day..... I will double-post in "useful info."
