Well that would still be about 5 hours from me so I don't think I can make it. I'll try to explain the best I can. The calculator I have is an excel spreadsheet that you just punch in the # of entrants and it spits out the money. If you give me your particulars on entry fee and payback percentage I can set it up for you and email it.
OK the first thing you have to do is figure out how much you payout per division. Take the total number of entrants in the class times the entry fee + added money to get the total money available. Then figure the %you are paying out (most places payback 80% and keep 20%). The first D gets 50% of the pot, the 2nd D 30%, the 3rd D gets 20%
The you figure how many people you pay in each D based on number of entrants. entries paid places % of total payout per division 0-10 - 1 place in each division 100 % 11--15 - 2 places in each division 60-40 16--30 - 3 places in each division 50-30-20 31--60 - 4 places in each division 40-30-20-10 61--90 - 5 places in each division 30-25-20-15-10 91--120 - 6 places in each division 28-22-18-14-10-8 121--150 - 7 places in each division 26-20-15-12-10-9-8 151--180 - 8 places in each division 24-18-15-12-10-8-7-6
So if you had 20 entrants at $10 each and no added money the total pot would be $200. The arena's cut would be 20% = $40 The payout would be 80% = $160
The first division would get 50% = $80 The second division would get 30% = $48 The third division would get 20% = $32
Then you divide the money within the division Since there are 20 entrants you pay 3 per division
1D first = 50% of the 80 = $40 1D second = 30% of the 80 = $24 1D 3rd = 20% of the 80 = $16
2D first = 50% of the 48 = $24 2D second = 30% of the 48 = $14.40 2D 3rd = 20% of the 48 = $9.60
3D first = 50% of the 32 = $16 3D second = 30% of the 32 = $9.60 3D 3rd = 20% of the 32 = $6.40
How confusing was that?

Yes I recognize that glaze in your eyes...remember I teach Physics and they scheduled it for first hour. That's just cruel to these poor kids to expect them to think at that level so early in the morning.

Jenni, as a soph, I used to have chemistry directly after lunch. Oh man, staying awake was the worst! The teacher was old Mr. Franco, and his lectures were dry as dust, "I can't take chemistry down to the sandbox level." were his famous last words. He always wore his reading glasses on top of his head - then would look all over his desk trying to find them. LOL! Did I ever tell you I torched my long hair in that calss? We were cooking something with our bunsen burners and a hunk of my hair fell forward from behind my shoulder. It flipped into the flame and in about 1 second it was gone!. By the time I could react, it was over and the fire was out, lol! Mr. Franco was white as a sheet. He sent me to the nurse's office, LOL! She asked me why he had sent me to her and I had to truthfully say "I have no idea." I think that was the highlight of my high schooll education!

rule 2 under PAYOUT says: " 2. In a 3-D payout, the total jackpotted entry fees of a class is to be divided 50% to the 1st Division, 30% to the 3rd Division (1 second off fastest time), and 20% to the 4th Division (2 seconds off fastest time). In a 4-D payout, the total jackpotted entry fees of a class is to be divided 35% to the 1st Division, 30% to the 2nd Division, 20% to the 3rd Division, and 15% to the 4th Division."
Since our show is listing this as 4D barrels.. the payout shows that the club will not make any money on the classes... is that correct? If this is so.. how do clubs make money on their shows?

ok.. my old brain fizzed again...
from what I understand... when all the entry fees are totalled... at least 80% of the entries ..MUST be given as the payout... right?
poor Chris.. and poor me!!! we will never get this!!!!

I was told by someone.. that the first 6 were paid in each division.. but from what you say.. that is not so... oh brother... I have less than 3 weeks to try to understand this... oh my.. oh me.

Your show - your rules, LOL!
You can payout whatever you want. My friend pays back 60% at her arena. Some shows pay 70%, NBHA usually pays 80%.
The number you pay in each division depends on the number of entries in the class. If you only have a small amount of competitors you would divide the money up too much and nobody would get much of a prize.
If it is 4D then your percentages are correct 35% - 30% - 20% - 15%. This is the percent of what is left after the club takes out its 20% or whatever. You would still divide those for payout within the division.
entries -- paid places ------% of total payout per division 0-10 - 1 place in each division 100 % 11--15 - 2 places in each division 60-40 16--30 - 3 places in each division 50-30-20 31--60 - 4 places in each division 40-30-20-10 61--90 - 5 places in each division 30-25-20-15-10 91--120 - 6 places in each division 28-22-18-14-10-8 121--150 - 7 places in each division 26-20-15-12-10-9-8 151--180 - 8 places in each division 24-18-15-12-10-8-7-6
Do you have anyone local who runs NBHA and knows what they are doing? Maybe you could talk to your regions NBHA event head and get in person instructions. Or local arenas who run 4D classes? It is hard to explain over the computer. Eventually you'll have the light bulb moment.

I came late to this thread, and now I'm sitting in the corner with a string of drool forming.... Snaffle, YOU ARE CRAZY. Only masochists put on shows with so many numbers. You need a nice judge to blame stuff on, and signs everywhere that say "Judges Decision Final." This way when the angry mob descends you could just shrug your shoulders and put your palms in the air. Two resources I'd recommend right away would be Dawn Hasz or Lori Passmore. I know you know Dawn, but do you know Lori? I know she's worked barrel shows at Double G. And if I were you, I'd arrange to have a sewer backup or something that day. It sounds like a lot more fun.

Mary Ann... I talked to Dawn and she told us to call Lori... great minds think alike! I have been after Lisa to call...
she has contacted someone who said they would give her a lesson in 4D... I really wish she would call Lori... especially since two people have suggested her.
I think I will grow more gray hairs over this one!!

Do you payout when the times are ? 15.555 16.555 16.556 and 20.789. Only 10 horses. They paid the entire 1d to the 15.555, the 2d to 2 entries at the 16.555 and 16.556. Does the 20.789 get the 3d money? It was a 1 second split.
