Have you ever wondered why a restaurant is so dog gone cold in the summer? I have. Almost froze a few times. Today a lady who has been a waitress for over 30 years, was telling me why the thermostats are turned down so low. It isnt because the kitchen heats up from all the cooking (like I was told years ago ) It is because the waitresses get so hot because they work so fast and hard! She said that this weekend, customers were always asking her to turn the thermostat up and she refused. She explained that at the fast and hard pace the waitresses are in, they sweat terrible and get so hot, they have to keep the thermostat down. She said that during the summer months, people should take a sweater with them when they eat out. Hmmm.. I NEVER thought about the waitresses!

Oh! I thought it was because they wanted you to eat their hot food, find it comforting, and then leave faster.
Your explanation makes more sense.

I totally get why they do it, but it still drives me crazy. I hate having to order a hot drink just to have a hand warmer. And I'm a slow eater, so my food ends up stone cold before I can finish it. But I am glad the waitresses aren't dripping sweat all over my steak.

LOL Snaffle...all ya had to do was ask ME! Really, it's hot work and the wait staff pays a high price. I like to smell nice (at least not BAD)at the end of the day. I'm reaching over people and past people all of the time. I would hate to think I hung a sweaty/smelling arm pit in someones face Most regulars that come to our restaurant know it's going to be cooler in there and they bring a light sweater if it's going to bother them. I have a few that INSIST I turn up the ac (it really is set at about 75 and that's as cool as it can get in there with the pizza oven in the dining room! we have added heat!) so I'm not gonna argue with them. I walk over and bump the thermastat and keep going. So, may I suggest a light sweater in the car ;D

Restaurants I can understand but why do movie theaters have to be like the North Pole? I wore a long sleeved shirt last week to see Inception (sp?) thinking that would be enough and I ended up having to drape my paper napkins I got for popcorn over my sleeves for warmth. Give me a break. It must have been sixty degrees in there. I had on long pants, socks, and a long sleeved shirt. I needed not a sweater but a coat! Film does not have sweaty arm pits!

I always carry a white lightweight jacket in the car in the summer for just that very reason. White because it goes with everything.

Frosty--I wonder if the electronics generate a lot of heat or are sensitive to it. I know in my theatre, it's a struggle to keep our dimmer room at a comfortable temperature because of the sheer amount of electricity flowing through it. A few years ago we had trouble with the HVAC system; within minutes the temperature in that room had soared into the 90's and we were having dimmer failure left and right.
I don't know what kind of light source they use in projectors these days, but I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason it's kept cold is to protect the equipment.

I was a waitress one summer in college. My dad thought I needed a taste of the real world. It was the hardest job I've ever had.

Oh yeah. Its true. I worked at Delis for years and we kept it cold because you never stopped moving. I loved going into the big walk in cooler cause at least it cooled you down, even with the thermostat turned to 68 you still got hot. People would ask to turn the heat up and we would tell them its just set at that by the boss and we weren't allowed to change it. Thanks Boss. Now with hot flashes its rare I get cold. Even though they are going away (Thank GOD) I still do not get cold. 30-40 degrees is perfect weather for me.

Restaurants I get but what about stores and other places.
I went to a training at a hotel conference center a couple weeks ago. It was 90 degrees outside so I wore shorts and a Tshirt. It was literally 65 degrees in the conference room. We were working with lab equipment that included temp probes so we knew for sure. At the first break I went and rummaged around in my car to see what other clothes I had with and was happy to find a light jacket. By lunch I was almost ready to go out and get the winter jacket and my husband's jeans, LOL. The instructor had to ask about 6 times if we could get the air conditioning set a little higher. We were all half froze by that point.
