Interesting discussion. I have never really thought about lifespan as being breed specific. I have known a couple of really old quarter horses and arabs.
I am shocked by the German study. If wild horses only live to 7 one wonders why there is such an overpopulation. I suspect that the high rate of death from predators for the youngest horses skew that statistic and that once they reach maturity, their odds of survival to a riper age is much higher.

Reading this forum has terrified me! I bought my friesian Issobelle last October when she was 8 months old and im already terribly attached. I terrifies me to think of her dieing so young.

Dear Rachel - Please notice that this thread is nearly 9 years old. Only a couple of people in the original discussion are still on the board. You might be better served by finding more current information - but if you want to hang around and discuss things, we'd love to have you! Maybe give us a little info about yourself and your lovely filly!

It is much like "I could never buy a gray horse because melanomas" Grey Moun just turned 27, Cindy lived to 27, my parents old horse Stardust lived to 30 .....
There is always a real risk of the heartbreak of losing them too young with loving and owning horses but one cannot become a slave to fears that this or that bad thing is somewhat more likely to happen to my horse just because of their breed or color.

Charlie, if you hear anything more concrete about it, could you let us know? I'd be kind of surprised if I see it in the FHANA publication. It's kind of a rah-rah magazine. I have a Friesian and his mother and grandmother are in the Bible of Friesans so a very good bloodline and he’s turning 23 this year.. I had one scare and he was hospitalized for 11 days but made full recovery and yes we’ve had allergy issues but he is vibrant and muscular and beautiful Sjors W has my heart and hope he lives another 10 years and beyond...

My godson, Rembrandt, is a Dutch born & bred Friesian. He is currently 23 1/2 yrs. Will be 24 June, 2019. He is worked 5 days/week approx. 50-60 min. arena work and trail rides once/week. He has been colic prone all his life, but now I am able to give him the luxury of 3 meals/day and no colic for over 3 years. He also gets one pint of mineral oil once per week to keep his gut moving. No question that he has slowed down at his current age and lung capacity isn't what is used to be. God willing I may be able to love on him for a few years longer. He is my heart !
