I went to the physical therapist today that my doctor insisted I go to. I spent over an hour talking to him about my lack of weight loss and my feet vs. stairstepper.
I guess I have to say I came away from that feeling better about my lack of progress. We went over my exercise routine of the last 11 months, what my eating habits are and what my intentions are with the fitness challenge for the next two months and just about everything else that I have been doing over the last three years to try and lose weight.
He flat out told me that there was absolutely no recommendation he could make to help me lose weight and he wouldn't change what I am doing exercise wise, except less cardio and more weight training and I told him I will go back to my 3x/week weight training once the fit challenge is over. He said I am already doing above what he would recommend exercise wise and even if I drank a can of coke and ate a candy bar/day, I should have lost weight with what I am doing exercise wise by now.
He felt there is one of two issues going on with me, the first, which is his inclination, is that there is definitely something wrong with me metabolically or the second, and not a happy thought, I have a huge mass growing inside me. He really didn't think it was that but he said it has happened in the past for people who cannot lose weight.
He told me that he was going to tell my doctor, who is a friend of his, that he thinks there is absolutely no sense in continuing with him and even visiting the dietician is a waste of time. His recommendation is that I continue on NOW, not three months from now like my doctor said, to the enterologist to have a full work up done.
I walked out of that appointment finally feeling good about myself. When I have spoke to my doctor about my lack of weight loss each year for the past three years, he has always told me less in, more out.....can't say I have done that this last year and even last Friday he made me feel like I have been lying about what I have been doing about not losing weight but at least he was willing to go farther this time with these referrals.
So I left my PT appointment and went to the gym for two hours. The personal trainer who developed my weight training program was there so I spoke to her for a few minutes, asked her to measure my body fat again to see if there was any progress since she did last year (I wanted the same person do it and I needed it done for my fitness challenge for Monday). She was stumped why I haven't lost weight, told me to keep the appointment with dietician next week and said to keep a complete food diary for an entire week not just the two days the dietician said. She also wanted me to try for all 10 challenges not just the 7 I was thinking.....
The good news was my body fat was down 3% over what she measured me at last year but then it is kind of hard not to think ONLY 3%
AND my hubby brought one of his heart monitors home from work last night (like the hospitals use) after I told him what the nurse said my blood pressure was for the second visit in a row. He made me sit, reading a book for an hour while the monitor took my pressure every 10 minutes. The good news was my blood pressure averaged 115/60 - way more usual for me. What surprised him though was my resting pulse rate was 50, his is in the mid 60s so he was impressed. That made me feel better about that issue.
What I did think was interesting was the physical therapist told me that if my doctor will not move forward with me to change doctors. He said I should not have to fight to get the answers I need and I definitely need answers. So even though I am still fighting an uphill battle about my weight, I am beginning to feel like the hill isn't quite so much a mountain any more.
