1 cup flour 3 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup milk 1 egg well beaten 1 tbsp melted shortening 1/2 cup cornmeal
Mix together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar. Add milk, egg, shortening and mix. At last minute, add the cornmeal and stir in.
Bake in smaller rectangular pan for 20 minutes at 400 degrees, top should be golden brown.
It's delicious! A great thing my mom came up with if we had leftover cornbread was to cut it into about 3-4 inch squares, then slice it in half horizontally so you have 2 equal squares that are thin enough to fit into the toaster. put some butter on and eat.....this is good beyond words....its my preference to eat it this way versus warm out of the oven.
