1/3 cup water 1/3 cup shortening or butter 1/3 cup canola oil 2/3 cup brown sugar 2/3 cup white sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 2 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 cup wheat germ 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp sale 3 cups old fashion oatmeal (not quick) 1 cup of unsalted, raw, sunflower seeds
Cream the first 5 ingredients. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in all other ingredients except the sunflower seeds. Add the sunflower seeds once the other ingredients are well mixed to minimize breakage.
Refrigerate for 2 or more hours. Roll into balls about the size of walnuts. Put dough on an ungreased pan and flatten slightly. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Do not overbake. Makes about 3 dozen.
