Well the doc sad it "technically" wasn't infected but the external ear canal was inflamed. It's been a week of pain. Last Thursday night my left ear was plugged feeling and when I went to bed it sounded like the emergency broadcast signal was going off in my head. Friday it was whistling in my ear so I went to the doc after work. I had a bit of wax so she had her nurse hose it out. Then told me she thought it was fluid behind my eardrum but not infection so just take OTC sudafed to dry up my sinuses (which were also not infected). Monday afternoon my right ear really started to hurt but I had forgotten to take my sudafed in the AM so didn't think too much of it. In the middle of the night I woke up in pain so back to the doc after school Tues. She sticks the otoscope in far enough to touch my brain and says no it's not infected just inflammation and gave me a prescription for antibiotic/anti-inflammatory drops. Tues night 4 am, I wake up wth blinding pain in my right ear, the whole side of my face hurt and my eye was watering and I didn't have any ibuprofen left in the house. I found a Dayquil and that dampened it enough for me to sleep. Last night I was still in pain and all day today. It's like someone is in there periodically scratching my eardrum with a toothpick and then sticking a nail through it. I also have some bloody/pus discharge and I feel like it is plugged up today. I just wish it would stop.
Okay I'm done whining. I'm going to put some drops in my ear and go to bed now. As a coincidence the Anatomy and Physiology class I teach is on the special senses lab which includes the ear right now, LOL.

I suggest you go get a second opinion. That discharge doesn't sound good. You also have had this way too long. Linda

oh no. Those ear aches are the WORST. I used to get them all the time when I was a kid. Then I got my tonsils out and have only had one since. But I remember how miserable I was with then. Hope yours clears up quick!

I am something of an ear infection expert as I am very prone to them. I happen to have a double ear infection at the moment, and I am taking antibiotics for them....
In my experience, when you have discharge coming out it means the eardrum has burst. Don't panic, that is natures way of resolving the excess pressure, but I would say that you DO have an ear infection. A year ago at christmas, both my ear drums burst (one on Christmas eve, the second on Christmas day) due to ear infections. You can tell when suddenly the pressure decreases and you have a bloody/puss discharge. The doctor gave me both oral antibiotics and sterile antibiotic drops. Once the eardrum is perforated it is very important that it stays sterile and it has a chance to drain. I personally liked to use moist heat, but I don't know if that is doctor approved, it does make it feel better.
Get a second opinion, ear infections are very painful and if nothing else they can give you drops to ease the pain. It will heal on it's own now that it has burst, and antibiotics treatment is somewhat controversial in treating ear infections (I have done both with and without routes) but you can get pain relief.
A flight attendant on an international flight showed me a pain relieving trick when I was really sick a couple of years ago and had to fly home. Put a hot moist paper towel inside a plastic cup and hold it over your ear for about 10 minutes (probably any method of moist heat would work but these were the tools available on an airplane). I noticed relief in minutes and this was when we were changing elevation.
Hope you feel better (and me too, since I am still very dizzy). Sheryl

I had my ear drum pop a couple years ago. I didn't have any pain or discomfort and suddenly in the middle of the night I woke up in terrible stabbing pain with bloody discharge. When I went to the Doc they were amazed I hadn't felt anything. Told me I must have a high threshold for pain for it to get that bad without feeling anything. That time they put in a wick because the swelling was so bad. That was the most annoying and disorienting thing ever. I figure my eardrum must have popped this time too. It felt the same as last time. Today it itches really bad inside there without much pain so I think that is a sign it is healing. I still have the antibiotic drops going in 3 times a day.

Sounds like an infection to me. Pus means infection. I would try a different Doctor.
