Roomba cleaned the day after we had the Rainbow out getting behind everything and getting the corners that little Roomba just can't reach. It was amazing how much stuff--especially fine dirt--Roomba still found in the carpets. The carpets LOOKED clean before she started, but she still filled up her little dust bin. I really notice the decrease in the dust around here when Roomba works every day. Such a hard-working little girl! Linda

Depot has them for $99 here. I was thinking about getting one, just to keep the kitchen floor clean but I think that it would scare the pee water out of my poor cats! (they eat in the kitchen) I have really thick carpet in the rest of the house and I've heard it doesn't do well on the thick stuff, so I haven't jumped on the $99 deal just yet.

My Roomba has been on a bit of a hiatus. Owner laziness. The floors got bad enough that I had to get old Hoover out. We went along great until he got something stuck in his throat. He started whistling in a high pitched whine, which brought the dog running (the dog that can run, anyway). Now I'm afraid there's something else stuck in his throat besides the piece of paper. I'm going to have hubby do a little minor exploratory surgery today. I'll have to tell my Roomba that she can work for a living again like yours! I'm glad she's working out for you. But I have to ask; with a name like Rainbow, is your big vacuum a he or a she?

Rainbow is also a female. Think of a big, heavy-duty German farm wife. Rainbow is a marvelous member of our household--and an extremely hard worker. Rainbow has lots of cool attachments like a minature revolving rug cleaner for stairs, a shampoo attachment, and lots of brushes. She is a heavy-duty workhorse that leaves things (including the air) spotless. Alas, she is unable to power herself and requires human intervention... Linda

We also have a Rainbow...but a Roomba...sigh...bliss. The Rainbow is great for picking up dog hair though!

Yes, Rainbow's are wonderful vacuums. I told the salesman that I would buy it if it took the dog and cat hair of the fake oriental throw rug. I was tired of getting down there with a sponge and taking it off by hand. The Rainbow cleaned the rug--so I bought it. Great vacuum! It is a nice combination--Roomba for everyday, Rainbow every couple of weeks for the corners and the deep stuff. Linda

It doesn't look like I'm going to be rescuing a Roomba, so I may purchase one of my own. I don't like spending money, but I'm learning.
Hasha, is "Depot" "Home Depot"?? I think Roomba's are usually $300 around here.

Dorothy, I'm wondering if the ones on sale might be the original incarnation of Roomba. She now has more buttons, improvements, and features. $300 sounds about right to me. Cheaper than a purebred dog, and a lot less mess.

Check the prices on Amazon before you go shopping just so you know what the parameters are.
Bed and Bath also carries Roombas, if you have one of those. Their prices were very consistent with what I was seeing on-line.
Just as a "truth-in-lending"... Roombas are not as long-lived as the big vaccuums lurking in our closets. I find the convenience worth the cost. I use mine daily--two rooms--and I expect a life-expectancy of 2 years. The newer ones (I have the original) are suppose to be built to be more durable. At first they didn't expect some of us to use them as much as we do, evidently. It was also important to be able to price them under $200.
I used to hire someone to help me get the house back in order occassionally. With the Roomba, I don't have that need--she makes all the difference. So I offset the cost of Roomba with the occassional hiring of help--I think Roomba is a better deal. Linda

Our Alice is relieved that her work load has been cut in 1/2 since the kids went back to their mother. I don't think I told you all that I caught her in the embrace of my office chair. I had gone off to work one morning, leaving her to go about her daily work. Amanda called me when she came in from school and said that Alice had been VERY naughty. She caught her with her back end jacked up on the rolling leg of the office chair! I still don't know how on earth that she got into that position. Did the chair attack her, or did she get "frisky" with the chair? I guess we'll never know. The chair has been banished to the front room and the fence is put up whenever she is working. Wouldn't want any little cross-bred chair vacuums running around!

Oh my gosh! A chair cross! You wouldn't want that at ALL. The cross-bred, even if a frisky filly, would want to just sit around all the time instead of work.
I am so glad you put an end to that relationship! Linda

Ok, Linda - I think you started it. I had to go out and get a Roomba to join my Rainbow. I think if they work together we may have a dog hair free - well almost - house? Maybe? Rainbow works awfully hard on that Newfoundland hair....I can't wait to try her out!

Now, THAT I believe is a great relationship....Two very hard working vacuums colaborating on the same project. I truthfully have never had such a clean house--and I don't feel like a slave or servant.
I hope you like her. Linda

Hubby told me last night that iRobot, the company that produces the Roombas, is coming out with a new consumer product later this year. They haven't yet said what it is, but they're guaranteeing it'll make a big splash in the robotics market. I can't imagine what it'll be this time, but the company's desire to generate excitement around it is working, at least out here in the corn.
