I have never owned a registered dog or cat, but I have had two people ask me questions lately, and I'm trying to inform myself. In the first situation, my brother in law bought a "purebred, registered" Pomeranian from a pet store. (To my horror) For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the "registry" but it seemed like they were mostly concerned with tracking health problems. As a member, benefits were free online "help" with veterinary and training questions and a data base of some sort to look up pedigree info. They paid $400 for this Pomeranian and are hoping to breed (to their unregistered make pom) AHA! After some looking, I remember. The American Canine Association. here is their website. acacanines.com The second situation is my an acquaintance. She just bought a "purebred" bulldog for about $1500. It is registered with the APRI? They do have a website. www.aprpets.org/main/index.phpThe bulldog owner is interested in getting into showing on a small scale for fun and she has already had people interested in breeding to her bulldog. I'm a big promoter of spaying and neutering and finding animals at rescues and shelters, but I know I am biased, too! I'm not familiar with "registered" dogs. Are these reputable registries? The only one I'm even slightly familiar with is AKC. Does anyone do any breeding? Willing to share insight into the world of dog breeding?

We have a purebred 12 year old German Shepherd. We did not register him - we have his papers, but they didn't mean anything to us except for when we researched bloodlines for temperment etc. We also have a purebred Newfoundland (we paid almost as much as I've paid for horses for him). We have his papers, but again, we did not register him. Both dogs are neutered and are not shown. They are pets. I do question myself on this dcision not to register, because it bothers me when people don't register their horses...so, I guess I'm hypocritical that way. I know that both GSDs and Newfs have breed registries, but they are like the AQHA or the AHA.

I don't know either of these organizations, but there are legit breed registries besides the AKC. However, being registered with the AKC or any other registry doesn't make them candidates for breeding stock. Just like horses, dogs should excel at something to be even a candidate for breeding. Besides being an excellent example of the breed standard, they should hopefully excel at the breed's job (Border Collies should have the "eye" when they herd, retrievers should retrieve, etc).
Years ago I was pretty ignorant about dogs and bought a purebred Australian Shepherd. She was registered as a "Miniature Australian Shepherd" (I don't remember the precise breed name) with the National Stock Dog Association. I found out later that the seller was the founder of that particular mini aussie group - the legitimate one was entirely different! That dog was actually a true purebred, standard Aussie by AKC standards and was in no way a mini.

I started showing dogs 20 years ago. you can registar with AKC they hold the most shows and have the greatest # of breeds about 150 in US. UKC (United Kingdom) you can also reg. dogs with them (I never have) they offer Reg. to some breeds AKC does not. If both parents are not reg. you can not reg the pups. you can however get a special title that will allow you to show them in obedience, herding, agility etc but not conformation. hope this helps if you need more infor feel free to email me Lisa

is that if you breed two dogs registered with two different registries, odds are the puppies cannot be registered with either registry so that is something to think about when buying breeding stock.

I just looked on Petfinder.org yesterday (mostly to toture myself, as I do NOT need anymore pets!) and there are 450+ dogs within a 50 mile radius of where I live. I didn't even look into cats--I'm sure there are a ton of them, too!
I personally think it is irresponsible for people to buy dogs OR cats without considering how much thought needs to go into caring for them properly, let alone breeding them. And the two people I was referring to in my original post are like that . . . The owner of the Bulldog originally got a "mutt" from the humane society because at the time (5 years ago) they couldn't afford a "purebred." So the dog lives in the house, goes to work with the husband (who builds houses) and is, in my opinion, a really nice, good canine citizen despite her lack of training. However, she started shedding, and got "smelly" and she has spent the last two YEARS tied up to the garage outside. And the owners can't figure out why she is aggressive toward the new bulldog puppy (who is living in the house and getting treated like a prince.)
I just think it is really sad.
Thanks for the info about not being able to register if the parents are from two different registries. I really just wish more people CARED!
sorry for the rant.
