I've been surrounded by people with colds. Unfortunally, I couldn't escape it any longer and it hit me late last week. Now, it's developed into a deep cough. No stuffy nose, no sore throat, nothing, just a deep cough, that won't go away! I've tried the cough syrup that my moms Dr. told her to use.. nothing. I've tried Nyquil Cough..nothing. I've tried various brands of cough drops.. nothing. The only thing that even helps is See's Candies, Pure Cane Sugar Twist peppermints. I went out tonight and bought three bags! I haven't been able to sleep more than a couple hours at a time w/o waking up coughing. I'm tried!!! This cough needs to GO AWAY!! Any ideas? Old family secrets? Anything?

Robutussin Expectorant (not cough supressant). It will break up the stuff down in the lungs so you can cough it up. Do NOT overdose on anything that is a cough supressant--you can get nasty hallucinations. But the expectorant is safe--go ahead and take more than what the directions call for. The ingredient you are looking for is Guaifensesin Syrup. You want to loosen up the cough.
And, while you are at it--throw away your toothbrush and buy another. Then soak it after you brush your teeth in 1 part bleach, about 10 parts water for 10-15 minutes. Rinse the toothbrush, put it away. Throw away the diluted bleach solution and make fresh for the next time. Linda

Take a whole bottle (if needed) of Robitussin DM. It will help you sleep and cough up the gunk. It also makes you feel better. Get well soon.

Mucinex! It's over the counter. It's guifenasen, the active ingredient in expectorant cough syrups... it comes in tablet form and doesn't have the dextromethorphan or other things in cough syrup.
It really breaks up that mucous in the chest.
My other recommendation is to get thee to the doctor. My cold turned into bronchitis that I've now been fighting for two months because I didn't get help soon enough.

I've heard a lot of buzz lately about Mucinex. Seems to be really good stuff.

It has helped me more than anything I've tried!

Thanks for the suggestions. I got a bottle of the Mucinex to try. All the Robutussin I saw said both expectorant and cough supressant on the bottle. There are just too many different kinds out there.

Kit, You are right. It is hard to find the Robutussin Expectorant. If you can find the Guaifensesin seperately it sounds like a great option. I will have to look for it the next time I go shopping. Tablet form sounds even handier. I hope it helps (and I also hope you bought that new toothbrush!). Linda

Nope, didn't buy a new toothbrush. I bought a bunch of them a few months ago when they were on sale, really cheap! So I'll grab a new one out now, then another new one when this thing is finally gone.
