I quit my newspaper reporting job, ended it in December. It was just too much to work two jobs and reporting is such awful hours and deadline pressure.
Well, it took forever, but the paper finally hired someone to replace me, a seasoned reporter. WE had lunch to go over the issues about the city I had covered. I've read some of her stories in teh paper. She seems to have a pretty good grasp of it.
So now I get an email from the editor (not even the reporter herself) asking me to come up with questions for the reporter to ask city council candidates.
Excuse me. I don't work there anymore! It's not my beat. It's not my responsibility! I'm not getting paid to do this.
GRRRRRR..
I tried to be polite, but sent back an email saying to ask about the things we talked about at our luncheon. I didn't have any other ideas.
I wanted to say, SHE'S THE REPORTER, IT'S HER JOB TO ASK THE QUESTIONS....
Thanks for letting me vent!

You should have replied with delight: “I see you have heard about and wish to take advantage of my new service!
For a Q & A outline I charge a reasonable $250 for a 25 question list outline with researched answers. For an outline of “questions for reporters to ask city council candidates”, I provide 10 good questions from which the reporter can pick and choose, for the reasonable price of only $150. I charge $35 an hour as a report council with a 3 hour charge minimum. Now that you are aware of my prices, when did you want that city council candidates outline? Thank You!"
I don't think you will be bothered further. But if you ARE . . . well, they've seen the price list.
GLHR!

Geez, they probably didn't mean any harm by it, but that was really pretty nervy. I wonder what would happen if you simply responded in a soft but firm voice, "I don't work there anymore." Maybe adding, "Are you looking for me to do consultant work?" Geez.

You know people get paid big bucks to do consultant work. Maybe next time just say, "I'd be happy to if you want to pay me to be a consultant until she has a better grasp on things, my rates are (--$) an hour." (oh and don't make them cheap because consultants charge alot) We have that happen here at work some. They keep bugging people after they have left. Sometimes they even bring them back occasionally for contract work.
