I am scheduled for my first one tomorrow and just realized it this morning when I looked at my calendar. It is going to hurt terribly bad? I would try to get out of it, but I think I'll go ahead and send the kids to daycare and spend a "me" day in Birmingham when I get out of the MD's office. Maybe do a little shopping.

I've had several of them.
First, before I forget, do NOT wear deoderant, powder, etc when you go in. You can take some to put on afterwards so you can enjoy the rest of your day without concern about odor.
As far as pain, it ranges from uncomfortable to painful. Basically they usually do two shots of each side from different angles. They "set" your breast on a platform, then lower another flat piece basically squeezing you between the two. Not fun, but it doesn't last long. I have never had any pain afterwards. As soon as it is over, all is fine.
I don't really dread them - it's kind of like getting a shot - you know it won't be fun, but it doesn't last long.

Relax--like DoorthyB said, it isn't that bad. The discomfort only lasts for a few seconds--and goes away completely as soon as the pressure is off. The worst part can be if they don't warm the X-ray screens ;D. This is something very important for your long-term health--so you CAN be there for those kids. Linda

Of course there have been lots of jokes about mammograms... they are uncomfortable, but not unbearable. It's momentary discomfort and then it's over. The best part is getting that little card in the mail that tells you everythign is fine.
But don't forget to do your own monthly self checks too!
My friend with breast cancer had never gotten a mammogram and she waited almost a year after discovering a lump to get something done a bout it.. now she's in big trouble....
DO take care of yourself. There's only one of you!

GOOD FOR YOU for having one done! I have had several due to family history, and will continue to have one yearly. I am not *ahem* very well-endowed, and even though it is a bit awkward, I've never been in pain. It has always been very quick when I've gone. I'd rather have a mammogram than get a shot!! Owie! I always remind myself that it is worth a little discomfort to have peace of mind.
I'll send happy squishing thoughts to you in the morning! It's really nothing to fuss about :-)

Kel, I'm not well endowed either and I've also already had 3 mammos due to family history. It is unpleasant but it is bearable.
I always get a kick out of the tech telling me, after my boob has been squashed to pancake thickness, just before she presses the button to snap the x-ray, "Now don't breathe!" AS IF I COULD! LOL! At least it's over quickly . . .
Early detection is vital.
Tricia, you may want to take a bit of Tylenol before you go if you're subject to breast discomfort at other times. That may help alleviate whatever lingering discomfort you may have from the mammo.

Well, I'm very well endowed and that makes a lot more flesh to be squished! Ugh! chris

footage is more to be pressed down, at least we don't have to put up with a lot of tugging to get it out there at all. I think that would be worse. The intimacy of having a stranger so close with your arm raised and no deodorant is what freaks me out. EEEEK! Get outta here, please! You are standing in my space!

I made it thru. You know, I have had a lot of medical "female" procedures done over the years, but I think this was by far the worst! Maybe it was because of not knowing for sure how it would be, but I think it was probably the 500 pound per square inch of pressure!
