I put off my taxes, because I knew I was going to owe. I did make my plan early, though. I went to the IRS site and picked one of the free services available to me. There are different requirements--some age-related, some income related. I picked Free Tax USA. All you do is fill-in-the-blank off the tax info sent to you by employees, social security, etc. You add up how much you paid for health care policies and put that in the correct blank. The on-line program does all the calculations for you and spits out your completed forms and files them electronically, if you wish. My US form was free. It cost me $12,50 for my state filing. Tax preparers here are getting about $80 to do this same thing. There is no way anyone can save me any money, it is what it is. But I saved myself about $80 with an hour or so of work. Next time it will take me less than half that much time. Oh, I had to use one stamp for the state to mail them a check. The US took electronic fund transfer. The site walks you through everything. And it has already notified me that my federal return has been accepted. This was actually pretty darned easy. If you want to know if it would work for you, go check out the sites they offer. At least one site posted that they would still do your taxes if you made more money, but there were some minor restrictions.
