I have been toying with finding someone who wants a horse to ride but doesn't want to lease or buy one. I happen to have 2 horses that hardly get ridden and when I do ride I seem to gravitate towards Pebbles. She is "my" horse. We have a relationship and she will do anything I ask of her...she may stop to question the wisdom of my request but will generally just try. I am sure most of you have or have known that horse in your lives. I was lucky to have Tsaya for years as a teen and as an adult. Now I have Pebbles. But that means Flint gets put on the back burner. He truly doesn't seem to mind but I always feel guilty that I honestly just prefer to ride Pebbles.
So at archery class last Monday I was talking to one of the other mom's who had a daughter taking lessons with my girls. As conversations generally do with me...we started talking about horses. Her daughter is horse crazy and has gone to many horse camps and rides "trail" horses whenever she can. So although she has no formal riding training she is not a beginner.
She came out to ride Flint today and see how they may get along. He was on his best behavior and went very nice for her. She is a fearless rider, but not a secure rider. I corrected a few things...like high hands and not moving her hands up on the reins (she was pulling back to her hip). Also taught her the most important thing I think a rider needs to know...the one rein stop. She is very willing to take directions. She moved her hands down and I never saw them back up the rest of the ride. I explained about the straight line from elbow to bit and she did a really good job keeping that line I was very impressed.
She is 16 so she can drive to the barn while the barn manager is there so she can ride even when I am not able to. She will ride at least 5 days a week. Poor Flint will wonder what happened to his cushy life! Of course once school starts we will have to work some other arrangement out. And until her seat gets a bit better and her one rein stop becomes automatic she will ride in the arena's so I don't have to worry about Flint being a butt and losing his rider.
All in all it seems like a good match. Her mom was telling me how they have been praying for some situation to come about so H can ride and He put us all together in the same archery class. Seems like it had to have His hand in it. H's dad is not a horse person and does not want to spend any money for lessons or leasing a horse so this really does work well for them...and for me too...I will have a little less guilt about Flint just sitting around
