and many of us can pack on 10 pounds before New Years Day.
What are your strategies to avoid over eating or making bad choices?

If I am home I keep Altoid mints around. Nothing tastes good with that strong mint flavor. I try and balave putt. If I havve a bad eating day then the next day I try to be extra good. I drink lots of water and try to stay hydrated. The extra salty food seems to make me extra thirsty.

One thing that I think can be a problem (or that I've had a problem with in the past) is the "in for a penny, in for a pound" philosophy. If you've eaten that one bite of cheese cake, you might as well have another slice, since you've ruined your diet anyway. NOT TRUE! Savor some cheesecake, or whatever your weakness is. If you want a whole piece of cheesecake, then go light on dinner. and then forgive yourself. You will not gain 10 pounds from a slice of cheese cake.
In fact, one pound equals an extra 3600 calories. An extra 150 calories a day from now until New Years will gain you 2 pounds. If you skip lunch and have a treat or two instead, you can probably come close to maintaining your weight. A LOT of the extra calories come from the alcohol that is consumed. Calories in a glass of wine are probably around 100, eggnog is about 400 or more. So you might want to have a sip of eggnog and then trade it for the wine. Don't waste calories on soft drinks. They have a ton of calories and you would rather have something else instead.
Take walks. If you are visiting with family, sometimes the best conversations are had while strolling around the block. It gets you away from everyone else, so you can have one on one time with someone or some time with a small group. It gets you away from the food table and it gives you more exercise and can give you more energy to get through the holidays.
I don't give up the treats. I might skip lunch or have a piece of pie for breakfast. I'll skimp on dinner. I will try to take small bites and stay away from the food table as much as possible. And I try to drink a lot of water because the sugar will really suck it out of you.

Well... I try to load up on turkey first. It's probably the healthiest thing on most holiday menus. I try to make sure there are also lots of good veggie options (steamed, sauteed, or roasted in a little bit of butter, not drowning in cream sauces or sugary glaze). Sweet potatoes are better than white, unless of course they're covered in marshmallows and brown sugar. In that case, I go with the white potatoes, and just try to eat less of them. Normally we avoid eating grains; I don't mind making exceptions for holidays. But after eating a pile of turkey, sweet potato mash, and green beans amandine, I'm not very hungry, so I'm happy with a small serving of dressing and half a piece of pie. Ever since going low-carb almost 3 years ago, I get the worst blood sugar crashes if I overdo it.

I'm finding the biggest thing for me to keep weight off is to do exercises. I swim now 3 to 4 times a week about an hour and a 1/2 to 2 hours. I LOVE it. It helps keep me sane in an insane world. LOL Plus I eat a salad as my first course, so I don't eat a lot of other denser foods. Oh and WATER! Lots of water. I have pretty much stopped drinking alcohol completely except for once or twice a month I have a glass of wine. The desire is just not there anymore. Don't understand why but I will take it. That will add a lot of calories too, so if you substitute water for 1/2 the drinks you will be skipping quite a few calories. Plus you will feel better in the morning. I still have 20 lbs to go but I am pretty happy where I am at right now.

Well since my SIL joined the family - she's a vegetarian, but she eats eggs, fish, milk products, so I've really upped the veggies on the holiday tables. I stuff myself more on veggies than meat and I'm not wanting the sweets as much.
