I went to the eye Dr a couple weeks ago. He gave me new contacts, my old ones were obsolute, they don't make them anymore. I was to try the new ones for 2 weeks, then go back and get rechecked because my eyes would change with the new ones. The new ones are not strong enough, but I made it thru the2 weeks. I went back Tuesday and told him that while they were comfortable, I couldn't see as well as I could before. He tweaked my rx and gave me another pair to try. The left one if made for an astigmatism. These are okay, the left one moves a little bit, but it's getting better. Tonight I went to the grocery store. As I was standing at the end of an aisle and looking at the sign saying what was down it, I couldn't read it w/o squinting. I first noticed something being 'off' when I walked into the store, everything seems a bit blurry, but not bad. But then not being able to read the signs was not good.
I'll try the old 'new' pair again tomorrow and see if it's any better.
Then I'll have to call the office and tell him again that I can't see.

Bummer. I know when I got contacts this last time I could no longer see up close. I had to wear ONE contact and nothing in the other eye so I could read or see the speedometer.

Do not let the optometrist guilt you into keeping a pair that you are trying. Do not let the optometrist tell you that it is your age and no one can see perfect with contacts. When I went to soft (I have astigmatism too) I became so frustrated. I could not read any road signs. I had to get very close, maybe 20 feet before I could read them. Makes it difficult if you dont have a gps and are in a new area. I also got they type where one eye sees close and the other will see far. mono vision? Altho I was told I could try as many pair as I wanted, I felt 'guilted' in to saying the last trial pair was ok. After a few months I went back to my out of date glasses. A few more months go by, maybe a year...and While the horses were getting their teeth done one day, the vet said something about his contacts. He was about my age, had mono-vision contacts and could see just fine. B ack to the Walmart optometrist I went. I asked the girls who the optometrist was and told them to pull my records because if they had the same one, I was going elsewhere. Found out it was a new guy. I explained what happened to me. He told me that it is true, that with the mono vision, I might probably never be able to read road signs from a distance. He also told me that I could test-drive as many pair of contacts as I wanted because there IS a difference and eventually I will find one for me. I was on my 3rd pair for testing, and on my way home I called the optometrist office and told the girls I could read the road signs!!! I prefer to use my glasses while at the computer and reading the paper, and I find myself wearing the glasses for grooming and often around home There is still a mild difference which makes the glasses a bit easier to see out of at times. I can slide them down my nose a bit to help me see some things better No one ever told me my eyes would change when wearing the trial contacts. Also, I was told to come back in a couple of days and share the results with them, and to pick up another trial pair if needed. I told them I would not be able to run back and forth every couple of days, that it would be 7 days each time. They didnt seem to like that... but too bad.

Yeah, if you don't like 'em, keep getting the opt to tweak, and try a different brand. There are tons of options to try, don't stick to his 'cause HE likes that brand (or gets a kickback or whatever ) They are YOUR eyes. I love my brand, have tried several different "bifocal" ones, but these are the only ones that allow me to see well in BOTH eyes (the one on/one off made me nauseous) well at just about every distance. Need mild glasses for small print but whoopee do, they are so great for everything else I'll take that small inconvenience. And I had to tell my opt what I wanted.

I agree that you should tell your doctor to try a different brand.
I had lasix and my eyes are changing as I age. Whether I like it or not, I'm now seeing with that mono vision and I hate it. I need to go back to glasses so I can see 100% out of BOTH eyes!

I won't settle for ones I can't see out of. My last eye Dr. old me I had a mild astigmatism in my right eye. This Dr. said I have one in my left eye and didn't say anything about the right eye. My old contacts were (left) -4.75 and (right) -5.50. The first test pair was -4.25 & -5.25. I wish I knew what the 2nd pair was. They are suppose to adjust for the astigmatism. Since I got my first pair of contact in...1983? My rx has only changed a TINY bit. The last Dr. I went to for 13 years and I think it changed twice. I switched because we got vision insurance at work and this Dr is only 2 miles from work. The old Dr isn't covered by insurance and is 40 miles from home.

I'm glad this thread came up. I tried contacts for the first time a couple of years ago. I wear trifocal glasses, and we decided on bifocal contacts for most things with readers for close up. After a few days, I realized I couldn't see road signs and I was getting double vision at certain distances (like where I want to look when I'm riding). That dr said that my pupils didn't dilate to the "average" diameter when I focused on different distances, and the contacts were only built to work within that diameter. Now, I'm guessing that he only carried/represented that brand.
Next time I go back for an eye check up, I will ask what options are out there. I've always had great vision and in my 40s I started getting far sighted, so now need glasses for most things, and it feels like I'm looking down a tunnel - my peripheral vision is awful. I'd love contacts so I can see out to the sides again.

I went back to the 1st test pair. They aren't "right", but are MUCH better than the 2nd pair.

I'll post this again for those of you in bi or tri-focaldom who have had trouble with contacts. There are MANY difference brands of bifocal lenses, made as bifocals (not those idiot one eye far and one near ones - they suck beans). They are made with zones and the eyes focus right for the distance you are looking. I think Trailpal, that's what you're saying, your eyes just weren't able to refocus as you looked? Anyway, I found that most brands had the visual zones too wide to be efficient and they still had me have one eye start (center) far and one start near. Did NOT like that any more than I liked the one eye distance, one near. Sucked. Bad. Hated it. Told my eye doc and said I wanted to try distance centers in both eyes. Yes... I gave up a leeetle bit of close up, but far and mid is *perfect*... and close is decent. I only need weak reading glasses for smaller print. Right now on the computer glasses are too strong, my contacts alone are just fine. I've used several different brands that a different eye doc has wanted me to try, but my CooperVision Multifocals are by far (and I mean FAR) the best for me. Your results may vary. I also had to tell this doc I wanted both to start far in the center - jackass told me I just hadn't given them enough time to get used to. Yessir, you're right, you know me better than I do! Anyway, after he actually *snuck* the sample to me his way and I called and said NO, I got my 'scrip the way it works for me. All this to say... if your doc insists on that one eye starts far and one starts near - you DON'T HAVE TO DO IT. They are your eyes, you may have to tell your provider what you'd like to try, but they are YOUR eyes and if the provider won't do it, I'd move on and get one who will.

Yes, I had the "zone" kind. I -thought- I was getting the distance and mid distance correction with just light readers added for close but maybe he was playing games with me, I dunno. But another beauty of living in civilization again is that there is more than one doctor around. Thanks for spelling it out

Trailpal I get that double vision thing too!! I notice it when I am driving and am looking way up the road. It is even worse when my contacts have some 'age' on them.
I have also noticed that I often get that weird double vision when I am looking straight ahead... but if I look out the top of the contacts or out the side, it is much better.
Does that make sense?
Any thoughts ladies?

Just check how your prescription is made, see if they are doing the two eyes different focal points... that could do it. When I had it that way I was dizzy, nauseous sometimes and felt cross eyed when I tried to see distance. Sucked. The way I have them do it now.. I love them, it's honestly like my eyes are healed for the day, I love love love my contacts, but *I* had to tell *them* what I wanted.

So Kit, now that we've hijacked your post, are you seeing any better today? I hope you are able to get a pair that works!

Well, today everything seems gray & cloudy...wait..it is gray & cloudy, that's the weather. LOL
I've worn the 1st pair the last 2 days and they are OK..not great, but ok. I think they'd be great if they were just a TINY bit stronger. But after weather the other pair, these are better than they were when I first tried them.
