For those that have barn cats.....

My kitten (Copper) just got neutered. Before I took him to the vet, I was playing w/the barn kittens at the barn. I am a city girl, but have gotten to understand that barn cats come and go.

At this barn, they do get shots and have cat food out 24/7. So, they are pretty well taken care of, but are never spayed or neutered. We tend to go thru them about every 3-4 years.

Anywho, these kittens were just covered w/fleas. I HATE fleas!

So, when I dropped off my kitten to be neutered, I asked my vet for a cheap way to kill the fleas. I used Revolution for my kitten. It kills fleas, ear mites, and a few different worms.

Anyways, she said that DOG Revolution is twice as strong as CAT. She sold me one dog pack (for a dog up to 80 lbs) which cost around $14. We have 5 kittens, and two adults. She said I would still have a little left over.

She gave me some syringes, and showed me how to measure it.

A kitten under 5 lbs takes 1.2 cc , and cats over 5 lbs take some over. I left my sheet at the barn, You can ask your vet, or I can get the exact measurements.

All of the barn cats are flea, ear mite, heartworm, and several worms free. I had a tiny bit left, but for $14, I may just treat them during the spring and summer.

My vet also said that it wont kill the adults to treat them if they have heartworm in CATS.

NEVER give a dog any treatment that includes heartworm, unless they had their blood tested for heart worm. It can kill them.

So, I couldnt do anything for the two dogs, but they didnt seem to have a ton of fleas, like the cats did.

I just thought I would share. It worked really well and it wasnt hard to break it down to smaller doses.

Be careful what dog flea treatment you use on cats, some that are perfectly safe on dogs will kill cats. But that is really nice of you to de-flea your barn kitties. I don't have any barn kitties right now but maybe I will soon, haven't seen our neighbors good mouser around so I bet something ate him. Sigh, I get feral cats that would be PTS and add them to the barn, my house cats are just that, house cats. And well being feral for barn kitties you don't get the chance to give them flea treatments-you can't get near them.
Luckily the borax takes care of fleas in the house totally, I will be doing the barn this week sometime soon now that most of its closed up.

I'm so lucky to not have fleas on my place! I don't know where we picked them up, but many years ago I had a Golden that got them someplace. Ew, it was hard to deal with! Fortunately Ribi never has picked them up when we go out, and I've taken her more places than all the other dogs put together. The barn cats have never had them, either.

We have a great program here on the island where if you catch a feral cat, the Animal Protective group pays to have it neutered- the vet only charges the $10, I think. We caught our two barn cats, plus one we'd never seen before! Unfortunately, one of the cats had kittens before we could catch her, but both kittens got caught, tamed, neutered, and are now house kitties in their new home. The other two cats are still hanging around the barn, keeping the rodents in check.

We don't seem to have fleas. No heartworm, either. Makes it a lot easier to keep barn cats

We used to have fleas, but haven't for several years now.

We don't have fleas anymore now that Frontline and Frontline Plus have emerged on the market. Advantage was great too, but we need big help with ticks so switched to Frontline years ago.

That's so kind of you to treat the barn cats. It sure will make them more comfortable.

We can't use revolution at my house because we have a collie & a sheltie and ivermectin can be deadly for them. We use Interceptor for HW and Trontline Plus for fleas/ticks. I buy the giant dog sized tubes and use a few drops on the heads of each cat - then split the rest between Cody and Tom. It's not exact, but it works and no one has ever been ODd. It saves me so much money I can afford to treat everyone.

Get a seresto collar. It lasts for 8 months and works amazingly well. It's very affordable too.
