Hi everyone, new to the forum! I found this forum while trying to figure out how people attach stirrups to their LJ bareback saddle. I have no experience with english saddles and stirrups so I'm not sure what I should get. I have had my LJ saddle for a little over two years and have only used it without stirrups in my round pen. I just recently purchased a long desired equipedic saddle pad and I would like to start trail riding in the LJ and equipedic this year and feel that adding stirrups would help me in case of a spook. I have my eye on some safety stirrups called smart rider escape safety stirrups, but I am not sure how I would attach them with stirrup leathers. I have read somewhere (probably on here) that wintec webbers are good because that way you don't feel the buckle. Is that what I should be looking at? Also, I read somewhere on here that people have velcro'd their pad to their LJ. What did you use to do this? My horse is pretty tall and I have a hard time getting things centered on his back because I can't see them very well from the ground, so I think this would be a good idea as well. Thank you in advance, Nicole

Hi! Unfortunately this group is no longer very active. I have three Little Joes and LOVE them!! I use standard english stirrup leathers and stirrups w/ built in safety cages. I have even completed three "limited distance" endurance rides (25 miles in under six hours) with my Little Joe! I have fleece covers over my stirrup leathers. Here are links to what I use including the saddle pad: www.ridingwarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=ERNCSNwww.ridingwarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=JMSS2LCwww.ridingwarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=EERSPnot sure exactly which stirrup leathers, but they are Wintec slimline ones. I posted here somewhere photos of how I do the stirrup leathers because I got confused whenever I removed them and tried to put them back on. I'll look for the link. Basically, they are installed "inside out / upside down" so the buckle is at the bottom just above the stirrup and the "extra" at the end goes inside, not outside like on a belt that we would wear. This has some pictures of the stirrup leathers attached. bayrab.proboards.com/thread/33652/member I was using cut down longer fleece type things then, not the ones linked above. If you use facebook, my last name is Brumlow

Hi Dorothy! Thank you for your reply and all the links and photos! I appreciate it very much! I just found that my gelding has grown so much that I will need to order a new girth, so I will get busy ordering some stirrups and stirrup leathers too! And probably some of those fleece covers too!
It saddens me that this group is no longer very active, everyone seems very nice on here from all that I've read! I will friend request you on facebook. My name is Nicole Fanshier. Thanks again for the help!

I loved my Little Joe. I no longer have a horse and the Little Joe went to my friend who helped me with my old gal when it was her time. The webbers work well but I think I remember reading that you put them on upside down as there isn't a way to attach to the LJP. And then put the slip part thru the stirrup and back through the hole. I used regular leathers and didn't feel the buckle. When you order try to get the long billets as then you won't feel the girth buckles but you will need a dressage girth, they are shorter than the normal english girths. What i loved best about the LJP was you were not locked down in a spot and stuck, you could adjust as you needed. A real boon if you have arthritis as being in one position too long makes you stiff. But i never felt like I would slip off. I like the looks of this girth www.statelinetack.com/item/lettia-coolmax-dressage-girth/E015045/ My mare couldn't do neoprene. Made her skin swell. I found this on line about the webbers. " my daughter rides in a Little Joe bareback pad - we added the wintec webbers (on upside down) with a fleece seat saver over and cages on the stirrups and a breast collar. She can mount from the ground even (her horse is short though - only about 13.3) and she loves her "saddle" - it comes with a colorful pad to wash so you don't have to get the bareback pad itself dirty. Has dees on the back also." I was thinking about getting some of those types of stirrups as they look much lighter. The metal ones would whack me in the ankles if I dropped them. Drove me nuts. They were very heavy too. I didn't have to worry about using the safety ones since i had changed the way the stirrup hangers attached, I added velcro (boy that was a pain to sew on) to the mix. That way your sitting in it your weight keeps it on, but come off and have the weight dragging it right off. I couldn't mount from the ground anyhow due to bad knees. I would also order Dees in the back and in the front to attach a breast collar. I had a bad experience with a bareback pad when I got to a hill and the whole thing just slid backwards and right off the horses croup. I never rode with out one again. Especially a bareback pad. It also keeps them from flipping completely around and adds more stability to the whole thing.

I love my LJ... I did buy webbers for it but hadn't figured out how to attach them...glad someone resurrected this topic I use my Equipedic that I also use with my western saddle so it is square and not shaped but my gelding still loves it! And welcome to the group....it has been pretty quiet on here and I haven't gotten on here much lately either...lots of work and home life keeping me occupied. Going to make sure and stop by more often.

Thank you for the welcome and replies! I just did order some wintec webbers yesterday. I hope I can figure it out. If I do, I will post a picture of what I did. I also ordered a pair of the smart rider escape safety stirrups, as my gelding is really tall and I like the extra step they provide. I can't wait until it all gets here. I feel a little anxious about trail riding in my LJ, as my gelding is still what I consider green broke. I have owned and trained him myself since he was 8 mos old, and he is now 6, but we don't get to go out much. And this year, he has decided to be afraid of stuff that has never really bothered him before. I would just keep riding in my saddle, but it's too small now and I can't afford a new saddle at this time because I want to get a custom one to make sure it fits him just right. So, we are going to try it and see how it goes. He is used to me riding in the LJ in the round pen and around the yard, but I have always ridden in the saddle on the trails.

I think the trick is to use them upside down. The loops go thru the stirrups somehow. Might not quite fit thru the holes meant for stirrups but I am not sure, probably depends on the stirrups too.

I may be mistaken but I believe at least some of the folks using the weber straps got a shoe shop to stitch them around the Little Joe D rings. Saddle repair shops most likely would refuse because liability but if you find a place that can sew leather and have removed all labeling that would forbid it you might be able to get Webers sewn on. Maybe the weber loops meant to go over english saddle bars will go over the top of the Peacock stirrups. I just did like Dorothy, used basic english leathers with the buckle down by the stirrup and buckled so excess strap was on the inside.

Hi everyone, Just an update. I got the webbers in the mail and decided I didn't really like them, and couldn't figure out how to attach them without finding to sew them on for me, so I sent them back. I then ordered some biothane stirrup straps. I got them yesterday and would love to share a picture of my baby and our setup, if I could figure out how to upload a picture! Anyone?

I'd love to see your seit up. Pretty boy in your avatar. I upload photos to photobucket and then copy their image link and paste in to put pictures on proboard. Depending on space used already I think probaords does allow direct insertion of small images but I've never figured that out.

testing. If this shows the pic directly you can use the quote option to see see the raw text that was entered to get the picture but it is just a copy and paste of the photo bucket IMG option.

He is really pretty. I love his coloring and the blue pad and breast collar compliment it well.
