I know, some of you have those new-fangled furnace devices.... But, maybe you know someone stuck in the stone-age (you know, someone who heats their house for about $300 a YEAR.) Most of us store our wood already split in the size we want to burn. But, that still leaves us with needing some kindling and smaller pieces to get that fire going. If you find a used ATV tire (free at tire stores) put it on top of your chopping block. When you are splitting, the tire keeps the wood correled. You aren't chasing it all over. You can pack it full and split a bunch of medium-sized starter wood. When you get down to kindling, everything stays on top of the block. It is almost as easy as turning the thermostat up ?

We saw something on YouTube like that - Hubby saw it and agreed that it was a great idea! but will he actually do it? LOL no. If I ever get stuck splitting wood, I will definitely use that trick.
For now, we are out of wood. We have some we are saving back "just in case". Thank heavens heating oil has come down in price!

It was a YouTube video for a very expensive Swedish axe. Anytime you can get a hundred dollars off on an axe, I don't want to know the rest of the price LOL. It was obvious the wood he was splitting was very cold, very dry, and short. And, funny thing--no knots either...

LOL funny thing that! we get our axes/mauls/wedges at the local hardware or farm store - no "100s" of dollars off of those!
Our stove is on the small side, so we have to do short logs. It's a nuisance to cut salvaged firewood in half - but heck, salvaged is easier than felling so no problems. I just wish hubby would follow up on the CL ads for firewood I find for him.
