Cookie doesn't need grain either, hence the 30%as a hay diet balancer. I give 1c. am and pm. I also feed about 2c. alf. pellets to make enough feed to mix her supps. into. Sounds like you are on about the same track as us.

He's currently on a TC product, I like the band fine, I just need a formulation that goes with a high% alfalfa diet.
Dawn, funny about the Essential K - That brand is sold at a store near work, but they are almost never open.
R has decided that the high NSC is not an issue for her youngster and she will go with the Complete, so I'm free to do what works for Tanner - but I still don't want to be a huge PITA to the barn owners. However - the BO was surprised to hear that the Complete is so high in NSC - he asked me to research something better for his oldsters - he knew right away that they shouldn't be on a high NSC feed. So all this discussion will help quite a few critters.

I've used smartpak and it has its advantages if you do several supplements. However, they don't have all the supplements that I prefer, so I'm doing home-made packs - I'm not sure it makes sense to do the smartpak thing at this point. Then I also need to buy some sort of "carrier" - pellets or textured feed to put the supplements in since the only "feed" he got before was the ration balancer pellets.
I looked into Dawn's Tribute suggestion and their Alf-Essentials looks pretty good (I need to check some numbers). If the local store actually carries it, I may got that route; the BOs were great about it and even said that if I end up buying and bringing it out, to be sure to deduct the price from my board!

Well, it's settled  Triple Crown has a "chat box", so I chatted with a rep. Turns out the 30% I've been feeding as a ration balance for grass hay will work out fine with the alfalfa mix hay / grass pasture, and I can even feed a little less of the 30% than I have been. And it's available where the BO's get the rest of their feed, so no hassle that way either. Thanks again for all of your input and experiences. |

Forgive me for only skimming this- I'm at Mary Kay Seminar as we speak I love Ration balancers, and the molasses may not worry me. They aren't *necessarily* listed in order of highest quantity and I'd like to see a figure for NSC (non structural carb). Buckeyes Grow N Win is about 12.5, for example, while oats are about 44. Because you can see the ingredients listed, TC is a quality product. Depending on your area , it may be the best. I push Buckeye and Hubbard because of company integrity, availability, and price. If I had a need for TC and it was easier and more economical, I wouldn't hesitate to use it, based on what I've learned from the brand. I think I agree that if you are feeding a mix, you're fine with the 30% grass formula. You could provide free choice loose mineral for alfalfa to further balance (if TC makes one- buckeye and progressive do, or like MA said you could do the Select products. It's more vital with young and growing horses, so we have more wiggle room with adults. Within reason, of course. We don't want them eating eachothers tails or dissassemblikg our barns. |

Good to hear from you Reds! glad this sounds in line with something you would recommend. He is also on extra E/Selenium per the vet. And he's on a hoof mineral mix, (zinc, copper and other minerals/vitamins targeted for hooves). He was on 3# of a sweet feed when I got him and had very poor hoof quality, so if I can minimize molasses, I'd like to.
We took a look at him tonight, he is getting those fat pads behind his shoulders, after only a week at the new place. I need to remind the BOs to put his hay in the small hole haynet to slow down his eating - they keep the alf/grass hay in front of them all the time (even a few flakes out in the pasture), and he will eat till everything is gone! At his current work level, I don't give any grain/fats as he just doesn't need it.

You may (er, I may tell you to anyway...) choose to stop the hoof supp after his feet get his boost. Good companies' RB's have it all, so long as the Horse's guts are working properly. We end up un-balancing the balance when we add a bunch of stuff. As in your case, you are filling back up a deficiency, so with those horses I typically run a few months of "stuff" in addition to the RB.
Try not to believe fats are the enemy, just because of the fat pockets. Ever talk to someone who retains water so they avoid water? Then they retain even more.
Many cushings/metabolic horses are on HIGH FAT feeds-
Note: the good fats high in the right omega's.

oh, yes, if he needs more calories, I'd much rather provide fats than carbs. And I look for a good omega balance. But to see him gaining weight on just hay for now means I need to ride more - or cut down on hay so he's getting only his 1.5-2%
I guess once I run out of hoof supps, I'll let it go.

I can't quite explain the physiology of it, but just because he's gaining doesn't mean he shouldn't have the fat or "grain" in a ration balancer.
Bodies still need that stuff for hormones to put the nutrients proplerly throughout the body. I've had customers on round bales (ha, their horses anyway) and theyve commented on how the body improved in overall balance after the RB was added.
The fat pocket areas and pot belly seems to redistribute throughout and make a healthier animal.
For real.
When something is lacking, it'll fake it by looking like its stored somewhere, falsely making it look like an over abundance - as is often the case with horses on round bales or full pasture.

Great info Reds I believe that our local farm n home store (in the town I work in so most convenient stop for me) carries some of the buckeye products so will see if they can get the RB from them in and save myself the 30 mile round trip out of my way to get the Essential K now that farm and home won't be able to order it for me. Gas isn't getting any cheaper and if can save miles on the truck am all for it.
