Thank you so much, gals... Zephyr had been a happy, dotty old lady for a couple of years. This hit fairly quickly. This weekend she was refusing food, having trouble getting up, and her abdomen had become distended. I immediately thought of a tumor. We took her in first thing and the vet also suspected that and did an ultrasound. She had a tumor on her spleen, which was bleeding into her abdomen. And of course the spleen is a very large lymph node, so that means the cancer spreads pretty much immediately. The vet said in young dogs surgery only means the end of their lives is less painful, but they still have about 8 weeks maximum from when it starts to bleed. Some people have taken them home with meds to say goodbye and have been very sorry as the pain often overcomes the meds. We weren't going to do that to her, she was already in distress after just a couple of days of this. So we both held her and cried, and our vet cried a little. She mentioned how it's not fair that we don't have them longer. The end was very peaceful. I had requested they get the port in and sedate her for our goodbyes, at least then she'd be out of pain. My DH came home and cried as he talked about her - she was our first dog together. We'd waited 7 years to get her so that we'd own our own home before getting a dog. I picked her out of 180 dogs at the no-kill I visited. I had to tell my DH how much I love him - he is so perfect for me, we are soulmates definitely. We are so thankful that she lived such a long, healthy life, happy almost 'til the end. She will be missed.

I completely understand. Hannah was 16 and obviously telling us it was time to go, but it's still so freaking hard to say goodbye.
I'm so sorry.

What everybody else said... no matter how long you have them or how much you expect the end is near, it's never long enough and it's always a surprise. My heart goes out to you as well!

Thank you again, everybody. I always know you all will understand. I cry every now and then when I think too much. Fortunately, I've got my anti-depressant here - Arrow. I swear, he was meant to comfort. If I start to cry the other dogs look concerned and/or want to leave. But he's right here, puts his paw on my shoulder and then lays his head on it.
