What would cause a foal to be blind....

A friend is boarding a couple of horses at her place. One is a mare that was an "accidental" breeding. She was probably bred by her son, or something really close. (Not her fault, it happened elsewhere).

Anyway, the filly is a really nice filly, but was born blind.

They are doing tests, and have her on some eye medicine in case of infection, but have any of you seen this?

Mother Nature makes mistakes in horses just as in humans. The one good thing about being born blind is that she won't have to adapt. They should bell the mare so the filly can find her in the field.

At a barn that I used to manage, we had a blind broodmare. She did fine as long as she was kept in the same field. We would bell her babies. There was one little filly that was a real stinker though. She would stand shock still and the poor mare would be calling and calling trying to find her. Once she did though, the little girl would get a nice big bite on the butt from mom, lol.

I totally agree about the bell. Another trick I've heard is to line fences with mulch so that there's a natural barrier the horse can FEEL before it runs into a fence.

Do they plan on keeping the foal for life? I dunno, I hate to be the downer again, but if it is permanently blind what sort of life can be guaranteed the foal? I feel bad for all involved.

lildot, I was thinking the same thing. Why? If treatments fail, why force her into that life?

I also feel like a downer, but so often I see horse rescuers spending thousands of $$ to save one from the brink of death. That money might be better spent saving 10 less affected horses. But people should do whatever they want to with their own money so I rarely say anything about this issue. Sometimes it just doesn't make sense to me.

Just like it doesn't make sense to me to keep breeding a blind mare just because you can and it gives her life a purpose.

It would be much simpler to euthanize at the beginning of life and move on, rather that make the decision later.

I was given a blind kid goat year ago. I couldn't stand what I watched, and I kept the little thing confined in a safe stall.

I gave it away to another goat owner. Little guy drowned within a couple of weeks at her home.

Well, it wasn't my mare so I didn't have anything to say about her getting bred or not, but she was a very well bred TB and a great and happy mom. Her foals made a lot of money on the track so I guess that is why they kept breeding her. We kept her in one field and she was comfortable enough to RUN around the field with her little ones.

Being blind isn't always a death sentence for a horse. Blind horses need some extra accommodating, but can be trained for riding, etc. John Lyon's horse Zip, the Appaloosa that he took on tour with him for many years, was totally blind. I do agree though that if they are not going to keep her, they might think about euthanasia just to ensure that she never ends up in a bad situation.

Right now, he is considering the options as far as I am aware. If he can provide a good life, he will. If she will have no quality, he is certainly reasonable.

She's a happy filly, but again, it will depend on the quality of her whole life.

Having a horse go blind over time is one thing, and we've nursed them along that way, but being born blind - I'd probably be in the time to euth camp too - *SIGH*

I remember a girl riding a welsh pony mare bareback and bridless down the trail in LA. It amazed me, the mare went with her nose about 6 inches from the ground while cantering along. The rider touching her neck for turns and such. Add in her filly running loose beside her and it made for such a lovely picture.
I rode with her for a while and learned the mare was completely blind and trusted her totally. And yeah blind horses can have quality of life, but then some can't adjust.
