This is a fantastic breakfast! Just like pancakes over the top of sausage. Serve it with a side dish of scrambled eggs and a dish of fresh fruit and enjoy!
Breakfast Squares!
1 12oz package of bulk pork sausage 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 2 eggs 1/2 cup milk 4 Tablespoons maple syrup 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil 1 cup all purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1. Heat oven to 350 2. Cook sausage in a skillet, drain off 80% of the grease 3. Spread cooked sausage into a 9" oven safe pan 4. Cover sausage with shredded cheese 5. In a large bowl, beat egg, milk, maple syrup and oil together until blended. Beat in flour and baking powder, and pour over the cheese and sausage. 6. Bake uncovered 30 minutes or until golden brown. 7. Serve with maple syrup

That sounds really good! I think we'll have to try that. I just bought some Bob Evans sausage today.

I just made these. Got rave reviews from my daughter, I loved them too. Hubby will be home shortly.
I used Colby-Jack cheese, as Hubby doesn't like cheddar, and I had to guess on the flour because I can't find my dry measure cups at the moment, but I just added enough to make it like pancake batter and that worked.

You had 'til maple syrup. lol... to each their own. Maybe I could try the recipe without the syrup... hmmmm Actually, up until maple syrup it sounded like a recipe I've been searching for that my mother made. Breakfast cookies. Not sweet at all, they were REALLY good. Bacon (or sausage), cheese, and I think sunflower seeds. Maybe this would be a good jumping off point for me to recreate that!

You don't like maple syrup?? Weirdo. LMAO!!!! I'm sure it would be fine without the syrup though. 4T isn't that much compared to the amount of batter you get, it just adds a bit of sweetness. Definitely put some sort of sweetener in it though, otherwise it would be bland. We put butter on top and more syrup, like you do with pancakes. Or, rather, like I do with pancakes

Real maple or that sugar carp? I only have the real stuff here. I don't really suppose it would make much difference.

I can't afford, or even find, really, the real stuff. But I buy the Log Cabin that doesn't have the HFCS in it.

Amber - I used to buy Log Cabin, but I once made the made mistake of buying the real stuff as a treat for Ted and I, thinking the boys wouldn't like it. They love it and won't let me buy anything else now *SIGH* Needless to say, it is a rationed commodity! LOL

I think these are much better when maple syrup is poured over the top before eating.

Gotta have the real stuff. It is expensive but worth it. My oldest son and I eat the real stuff, my youngest and hubby eat the Log Cabin with no HFCS in it. I was pretty excited to find that for them. The real stuff is pretty pricey. In the summer though we can find it locally for less at farmers markets etc. Lots of maple syrup made in this area.
I am going to make these breakfast squares tomorrow and hopefully have some leftover for the week to heat up. Thanks for bringing this recipe up!

I don't know how I missed the replies back in April. The maple syrup added to the batter does NOT make it taste sweet. I would guess that the maple syrup is in place of sugar... the maple flavor is a bonus I have tried this both with and without the maple syrup poured over the top when done. I prefer it added ;D This is even GREAT warmed up the next day!! When I have guests over, I buy the real maple syrup. Pricey.. but oh my gosh it is good stuff!!!

I mixed up this recipe again today and used less than 1/2 the cheese. We liked it better and felt that it doesnt need any cheese.
