I can't imagine why a store wouln't want to take the feed back. Seriously it doesn't cost them anything. Depending on the company, they either just take their word for it and they toss the bad bag in the trash and get a credit, or the bad bag goes back on next week's truck and they get a replacement bag for free.
My store is great about returns. I had a bag that must have gotten wet, and there was an odd looking area about the size of my hand on the inside of the bag. The feed looked and smelled ok, but the bag looked like it might be moldy. They took it back right away and gave me a fresh bag. Even offered to open it at the store to make sure it was good.

Hi guys, Nutrena finally got back to me on FB, thanks snaffle for that suggestion! ;D
It looks like I was looking at the wrong code on my bag. I don't know if any of you feed Nutrena but I thought I would copy and paste her response in case anyone else was wondering too.
Her response back
great question. The code you have provided isn't the date code, that's actually a product code for use between our dealers & plants for ordering. What you need looks like this on the tag - example: "Lot: MG9365". The first two letters just indicate the plant it was made at, then the next number indicates the year (2009, in this anything made in 2010 would have a 0). The next three numbers are the Julian Date code - essentially, just the number of days in to the year it was made. January 1st would be 001, January 2nd would be 002, and so on until Dec 31st would be 365.
As for freshness - ideal on a textured feed is to use within 45 days, 90 days for a pellet. Nutrition content remains good for a few weeks after that, those are just ideals.
The correct code on my bag is ME9268
ME= Plant made at 9= the year 2009 268= the 268th day in that year.
So that would be around Sept. 25th 2009... according to her my bag is fresh until 90 days ...
