There is an item I need to buy at Tractor Supply.
Price is close to $300 and I just will not or can not do that It could be months before it comes on sale and I need it now.
Any suggestions for negotiating with the manager?

DH does stuff like this all the time, he wouldn't even bother with the manager. He'd just ask whoever was there working, what the best price they could give them was. There has been VERY few times when they haven't given him at least 10% off.
When you do go in, I'd use the word "want" instead of "need". If you need something, you'll pay more than if you want something.

So far Kit I have spoken to 2 employees... not the manager. The first lady told me that she would see what she could do and call me back...
I have never received that call.
2nd young man told me to call on Thanksgiving Day to find out what the Black Friday ads would be.
I would REALLY like to have a 20% discount
the website is offering 15% on orders placed on line and shipped. I am going to talk to the mgr tomorrow and ask if I can get the 15% instore..
thanks for educating me on the word thing.. I think I did say I "needed" the item

My dad does this all the time, too, even in Walmart - he never fails to get the discount Do try the above suggestions. Another option is to say that you'd take the floor model/demo if they'll give you 20% off for the imperfections/use.

Ok this is interesting...Walmart even? How cool is that! going to remember this Yeah, last Sept I was out in Poway when my grandfather passed away. Dad wanted some new patio furniture for all the people who would be coming over after the funeral. We went down to the local Walmart, and he hemmed and hawed over a couple of different sets. One had been on display and had ever-so-slightly faded cushions - it was normally about 495. He told them he'd take the display set for 300 IF they threw in the fire pit that was on display with it for free I was totally in shock when they agreed to the 300, and said they'd have to charge him 25 for the fire pit (normally 125). He took the whole thing home for 325 when it would have been 620. I was amazed.
