OK, you chickens - I tried it!
Since I was unsure about the flour used, I did a search and got lots of tips and reactions.
Some used reg. flour and some used cake flour. *I* never have cake flour so I used reg.
I followed the recipe as printed above EXCEPT I added a pinch of salt, as suggested and I'm glad I did.
The orig. calls for 3 minutes at high power (1000 watts) My micro is at least 1200 watts, so I cooked it 3 mins. on power level 9.
Results:
It IS cake. It rose way up out of the mug, but was cooked by then so didn't run over and make a mess.
I turned it out into a bowl right away, and it came right out of the mug and held its shape. I figured it would cool quicker that way.
The consistency is definitely not sludge - it's a heavr, moist cake and is delicious.
I was expecting liquidy gooiness - which I did not get and was a little disappointed.
It is very rich and made enough for 2 cupcake sized servings.
I'll try it again another day at power level 8 to see if that leaves it a little gooier. My power level 9 might have overcooked it, doing away with the gooiness.
The consensus is - it works and does indeed make a cake and not sludge. I could have hoped for a *little* sludge, so I'll try a lower setting next time.
Also, many people added choc. chips, which would have stayed melted and gooey. As for me, I couldn't bear to add in one extra calorie!

I tried it too. I used a bowl instead of a mug and that worked well also. Our microwave is 1100 watts, so I went to power level 9 and it worked great. The cake was good, almost like a sponge cake. It could have used a little salt and a touch more vanilla.
It was the perfect size to split with DH. And the best thing... no mess and no leftovers!

Oooooh, I definitely have to try this. I have a couple of those soup-bowl-style mugs; they'd work perfectly.
