Hmmmm - what kind of apples work best? More tart or on the sweeter side? I've got granny smiths, red delicious, pink ladies, and galas in the fridge.

Karen-I used a few granny smith, a few jonagolds, a few fuji, and a few golden delicious. I just went down all of the apples at the store and picked up some of each except the red delicious because I think those are gross

I really loved Stella's approach. The apple-y flavor was very intense, kinda tart like a Mac but sweet at the same time. Lemme tell ya. There ain't a candle in the potpourri store that could do better than this smell.
I know applesauce seems like a sort of small thing; but there is real excellence here. You know the expression, the god is in the details? Mmmmmm.... !!! Outstanding. Truly outstanding.

Oh, I love a good applesauce - the jar stuff is yuck. I don't "do" red d's either, but my oldest son loffs them, so I always keep a few in there for him

That is a good idea to make it in the crockpot. I'll have to try that.
If you have some of those little ziplock lunch-sized containers, you can put the applesauce in them and freeze them. Then, when you make a lunch-to-go, just drop in the frozen applesauce. It will be ready-to-eat by lunch time.
And, frozen applesauce makes a pretty darned good substitute for ice cream...

o my gosh! I made this last week - I used 4 Braeburn apples. Hubby and I are now officially spoiled, we will never get the stuff in a jar again! Between us we ate the whole batch We had thick, boneless pork chops (made shake n bake style), steamed spinach with bacon and vinegar, and the apple sauce. While everything was good, we really pigged on the applesauce oh - my little crockpot has only two positions - off and on. The sauce was done in about 3 hours, way before dinner, so I turned it off, and then turned it on again for about 20 minutes before serving dinner.

I made a batch over the weekend - AWESOME! I have to hide it from the kids or it's gone! And since I have a really big crockpot I used 12 apples of varying sweet/tart ratios - soooo good!
