OK, folks, our very own Marci suggested that, for after my surgery, to use MSM (and a couple other things) for better recovery. So I read up more on MSM. I've always just thought of it as joint stuff for horses. I found this: www.evolutionhealth.com/msm.htmAnd about fell out of my chair in a hurry to go get some MSM now! I simply got the horse grade 99% pure MSM crystals. I started on 1/3 tsp. (9400mg) per day on FRIDAY. I've had some bad hip pain, on and off, but really on lately, for years due to protecting my bad shoulder. It's been pretty painful lately, making me hobble around like a 90 year old person. Today, my hip is 95% free of pain! I'm hoping for some of the other, never thought of by me, benefits of the MSM to kick in, too. Hoping my fatigue lets up and my hair and nails grow better! If you have some pain you'd like to get rid of and get other health benefits, try this. I found Country Supply carries the best cost on MSM, the Animed stuff. Same concetration as the pricier Vita Flex (which I got locally way too expensively).

I'm curious as to what it tastes like. My cat needs it but she won't eat it, even mixed with canned food. I wasn't brave enough to try it. And yeah I looked long and hard for the best price on MSM when put Nib on it, and Country Supply was the best. I also make sure to enter the code for Sarah's rescue so she can get some money.

Ted and I have taken MSM for years. It is the one thing that really helps keep some of my chronic tendon/joint issues at bay. BUT - I just found Traumeel for acute issues. I have been havin trouble with my shoulder for the last several weeks. Couldn't lift my arm over my head, certain positions caused severe pain. Saddling a horse was next to impossible without pain (didn't stop me, just hurt ) I bought some Traumeel tablets and a tube of the cream on Friday and used it right away. By that evening I was nearly pain free!! I have remained so ever since. I had Phillip take it right after his tumble and he's not been sore a bit. I am really sold on this stuff!

It tastes like sucking on stainless steel acidified a bit (like on stainless steel coffee cup lids that have alot of coffee residue on them)...not completely yucky, but you want to chase it with something, even if it's just some more water. I put my dose in about 1/4 cup water, stir it and quickly drink it, then chase it.
I'll check the Traumeel stuff, too. Does it have all the other health benefits of MSM? I'm looking at it's whole package, now, but still want stuff for pain and healing for my shoulder.

I have been taking msm caps for about a year to help with overall pain - its an anti-inflammatory. Occasionally I taste it and it does not have much of a taste, it's more of a "texture", if that makes any sense. I can feel it on my tongue and that's about it. I did notice in one write-up of it that it can taste bitter but maybe that is only for certain individuals.
Karen - I had a horse-friend who was into all the homeopathic an herbal things, she swore by traumeel! I'd forgotten about it but I think I will look for it. I am just so sore all the time! I always "over-do" on the weekends so maybe the Traumeel will help on Sundays and Mondays.

I tried MSM inside a human joint formula concoction. Didn't notice much difference, I suspect the dosage isn't high enough. Is the stuff we buy for horses human consumption grade?

I used to take the horse stuff, put a teaspoon of it in my mouth and drink it down with something. I liked using something sweet. But it leaves your mouth feeling refreshed and very clean. And taken with sweet there is no real aftertaste. I got to where I kinda liked it. But I got the capsules this time and yeah its not as effective-they can only fill them so much-have to take 4 to get one teaspoon. I need to order some more of the MSM in loose form. Start feeding it to Shadow again and take it myself. You know its highly water soluble I wonder if you could just put it in the pets water?

Pharmaceutical grade is MUCH more expensive, and I figure, if I can give it to my horse, I can give it to me, but I'm not as picky as some.
Supposedly humans should take about 1-8 GRAMS of it a day, some may even need more. I'm taking the full 9400mg a day for right now. I'm guessing the older and more joint-pained one is, the more you'll need. Check the prices of getting enough of that in capsule form, you'll freak. Way more expensive. I'm happy with the horse MSM myself. Still painfree right now. Getting ready for my midday dose.
Heck, I took my horse's Dex one year (I think it was) to cure my yeast infection! Worked a charm and no doctor bill for me! But some just aren't that brave.

I found the site for Traumeel and sent them an email. They even call it an NSAID, but without the side effects of the drugs. That scares me a little as I am allergic to NSAIDs (the bad kind of allergic). I know some of the 'natural' derivatives they use are things I shouldn't take, like White Willow bark... so I wanted to see if there was anything related in their stuff. I have a feeling I can't take it either, bleh...
But I'm glad to read this info about MSM Melelio... I have been taking it too, but obviously not high enough dosage. Thanks for the link and info.

Too bad, t-leigh, because I LOVE that traumeel! I had results so fast and so much more dramatic than ibuprofen or anything like that - I just couldn't believe it! Even after saddleing about a dozen times on Saturday (switching saddles, etc) No real pain - normally I'm in pain just lifting the saddle up, and sometimes my arm just collapses - not this time!

Karen, thanks for this info. I will be getting some of that for my post-surgical recovery. I just don't want to mess with any pharm type prescription they'll give me. Not with a young child in the house.

T-leigh, I would venture to say you'd do well with Traumeel because it's homeopathic. The tablet you see is 99.999% chalk, and contains only a few molecules of the substances from which it is derived. Since it is homeopathic it is energy based, not biochemically based. Unless you're allergic to chalk, you would probably do just fine with it.
Be aware though that Traumeel is generally used for trauma, bruises, and the like. For a headache, homeopaths usually use something else. Their type of medicine is highly specific, not broad like how we take an aspirin.

Right, that's the "traum" portion of the name! I am using it for tendonitis that hasn't responded to anything else, and it is working wonderfully. Also why I told Phillip to take some immediately after his spill and had him use the cream on his shoulder, which took the brunt of the impact.
