Among my other purchases Sunday, I got a pound of ground beef - expensive pound with low fat content. I didn't really realize how low until I was cooking it last night. 96% lean so it doesn't even count as any fats.
However, I also decided I don't know how to season meat. I think part of it is that the fat content was too low, but how do you season hamburger patties??

We use Lawry's seasoning salt on them. Kind of high in sodium, but it makes them taste great!

Oooh, I haven't made real hamburgers in forEVER! They sound good...I oughta do that soon.
Anyway, when I make 'em, I take a pound of ground cow, a well beaten egg (helps hold 'em together), a handful of oatmeal to bulk them up, and generous sprinklings of garlic powder & hickory smoked salt. DARN tasty, those. I don't have a grill, which is heartbreaking, so I fry them up in a cast iron skillet.
Shoot, now I'm hungry...

Yeah, what Chickie does. Except I add finely chopped onion.

When we get our 1/2 cow, they put some of the ground beef into patties so we don't have to add anything. I remember making patties with ground beef and having to squish around the ice cold ground beef and eggs. I hated doing that.

Heh...I hate it too, so I make hubby do it. ;D He doesn't know how to cook much of anything, and doesn't yet have time to learn (but he does want me to teach him one of these years), so I figure that can be his contribution. He doesn't even question it anymore, just grouses about how "icky" it is. ;D

we don't use ground cow, ground bison instead, REALLY good, juicy and lower fat, YUM. DH seasons with a mix of garlic and onion powder and a little pepper. Just some pink in the center... yeah, that's it. Shoot, now I'M hungry too!

Oh, and yeah, Mom's right. They need teeny bits of onion, especially if you can get your hands on an honest-to-God Vidalia. Darn tasty.

DH puts garlic and onion powder, sometimes Lawry's season salt, and A-1 sauce. Mmmmmmm... so good.

Just some pink in the center And now I'm NOT hungry! There's something about the sight of meat that isn't completely cooked that makes me lose my appetite. Totally grosses me out! I saw an Applebee's commercial last night, and it showed a peice of beef cut into slices, and they were red in the middle. I was glad I'd already had dinner, because I wouldn't have been able to eat after that. Gross!

*LOL* This is part of that regional thing... I've found just about all the locals here, and others I've met from midwest locales, can't stand beef unless it's cooked to death! And I've had several say they can't stand steak... well, yeah, if it's cooked to death it'll be tougher and not have much taste left! Lordy, I just realized I need a disclaimer - to anybody on the board, I'm not talking about YOU! If you are different and like your meat just run under a hot light rare, you don't have to tell me you're not all like that, I know!! Trust me!! OR if you like it cooked to death and think it's wonderful like that, it's OK!! Really it is!! ;D I'm just and only referring to those locals and others that I've personally had meat conversations with! LOL!

lol t-leigh... I had a hamburger done "medium well" when I was in Florida once and it was raw in the center. Raw! Nasty...
I do enjoy a true medium steak though... mmmm.

LOL I almost never eat steak. Seriously, I can't even say how long it's been since I've had it. I don't like it "cooked to death" but JUST until it's not pink anymore. It's raw if it's still pink, and that's just gross! I also won't eat anything cooked on a grill. I have a perfectly good oven/stove and don't live in a cave. I don't need my food cooked over a fire! My stepdad was one of those "cooked to death" kinds of people. When we'd go to eat out, he'd order his steak "well well well well done" and would usually send it back to be cooked more. I don't know how he could even chew that shoe leather, because he also had really bad teeth! I'm really not a beef fan in general. I've wanted to try buffalo, but my grocery store sells it for $4.99 a pound and I'm just not THAT willing to try it.
Oh and my sister? She's sent steaks back for being OVERcooked, and she orders them rare! To me, that's just asking to get food poisoning or something. And no, I won't eat out with her if steak is on the menu.
