Due to a slight error in the procurement dept, we wound up with an over abundance of oatmeal... people oatmeal. Anybody have horse cookie or other recipes to help me use some of this up? I already eat oatmeal (or sometimes multgrain) cereal for breakfast every morning, but I think I have about a 2 year supply now!

I bet Buster would enjoy oatmeal just plain or wetted down, but you could probably substitute oatmeal for the flax and bran in the flax recipe I just pasted. You might could make oatmeal flour too if you have a food processor or blender etc, but plain ole white flour is an excellent binder to hold the cookies together.

I found a recipe for some oatmeal molasses cookies that I put the magnesium in (I'm sure somebody will tell me that cooking magnesium negates any benefits it gives...), and Amber(horse!) loved them. But the regualr recipe was quite simple, oatmeal, applesauce, molasses. Bake 'til set, cool and cut into pieces. Easy and the horses go nuts over them. If you're interested, I'll find the recipe with the actual recommended amounts of everything.

I found a horse cookie recipe that uses flour to hold it together. Do you think that flour is bad for horses? Anyway, this recipe has shredded carrots, which may be more effort then I am willing to expend...

here's a horse cookie recipe that i have used before. 1 c. uncooked oats, 1 c. flour, 1 c. shredded carrots (or apple, or both!), 1 t. salt, 1 T sugar, 2 T vegetable oil, 1/4 c. water. 1/4 c. molasses. Mix as listed, make little balls on an oiled sheet and bake at 350* for 15 min or until golden brown.
I've also just spread it out on the sheet and baked it like than, then cut it up with a pizza cutter. Hint: oil your hands, this stuff is super sticky to try to work with!
ooohh, just thought of something. maybe you can replace all or part of the water with applesauce if you don't want to go through the effort of shredding the carrots? I've also used finely chopped apple. but i bet adding the applesauce instead of the water would still give it enough moisture (you can always add more water if it's too thick), and give it a nice apple flavor for the horses.

Easier: 1 cup oatmeal 1 cup oat bran 1/4 cup molasses 1 cup applesauce (I think this is right, but go easy at first, start with 1/2 cup... you'll want the 'dough' to be pretty thick, but quite moist) Mix all together. If too dry, add more applesauce, if too moist, add more oatmeal. Stick in a pan about 9x9 or 8x10, cook about 12-15 minutes at 350. They'll set into nice cookies as they cool. Cut into squares.
No flour, no grating nuttin', easy and all good stuff.

MJ, yours is almost the exact same as mine, 'cept mine has oat bran for 1 cup instead of two cups oatmeal. I'd like to see the instructions if you don't mind... easier to buy 3 ingredients than 4!

HayStacks
I use a cookie scoop to form these.
Preheat oven to 250 degrees
2 cups regular oatmeal (not the quick cooking type), you may need a bit more depending on the humidity 1 cup unsweetened natural applesauce 1/3 cup molasses
Mix well and let sit a few minutes for oats to absorb moisture from applesauce.
Line a cookie sheet with cooking parchment paper. Drop into mounds with cookie scoop. Do not flatten.
Bake at 250 for about 2 hours. Turn cookies over after 30-40 minutes to expose bottom. Leave in oven until cool (several hours).
I use a round Tablespoon measurer and scrap them off a little. The recipe makes appx. 40 when I do it this way
