Uggh! Yesterday I took the DR trimmer mower to the last of last season's burdocks in my pasture across the road. I ended up with a good share of them on myself - even a clump in my hair which was great fun. Last night I was sitting on the couch and rubbed my eye or something and their must have been a burdock hook the fell off into my eye. Severe and immediate excruciating pain. My eye watered and got all red but I knew that hook was stuck somewhere in my eye. The pain went away for a bit but about an hour after I went to bed I woke up in terrible pain again - closing my eye, opening my eye, any movement was very painful. Took on some ibuprofen and finally got back to sleep - for about an hour, then it was the same all over again. I thought about going to the ER but didn't know if they could do anything for me in the small town hospital. Finally made it to morning and I couldn't keep my eyes open. Took a shower without opening my eyes and went to feed my horses. Almost crashed a few times because my eye would spaz and close - then the other would close as a reflex. PLus my sore eye was watering 100% of the time. Made it back home and told hubby he'd have to drive me to the Eye doc so I didn't crash. He called into work to say he'd be late and we got to the eye doc at 8 when they opened. It was starting to feel a little better but the doc had to numb my eye and invert my eyelid to get the barb out. It was way up in the fold of my lid and had scratched the heck out of my cornea. So I've got a number of minor corneal abrasions and orders to put drops in my eye 4 times a day, take ibuprofen, and got some drops for discomfort. Great way to spend my day off.
This is the second time I've had to go to the doc for removal of a burdock barb. Last time I was brushing them out of Chance's mane and the wind blew some into my face. That time it was stuck into my cornea itself right about where your eyelids close when you blink.
