Do you think that giving jiaogulan to Wrigley might help with inflamation and stiffness due to elbow dysplasia? I don't think it will hurt, but is that what it is used for? Has anyone seen health benefits from giving it to their dogs?

In my research after I learned about it from Karen, I don't recall reading that jiaogulan was indicated for inflammation (per se) and joints.
What is does do is increase the blood's circulation. Now, that in itself can help take supplements or pain meds through the body to the tissues needing them more quickly. We use it with foundered horses to increase the blood flow to the damaged hooves, taking oxygen and nutrients there more easily, in hopes of healing the separated laminae and growing healthy replacement hoof faster.
Someone please tell me if I'm wrong. All I know is that it does work that way for foundered horses.

Yip, that's my understanding too. But I also know it's considered an "adaptogenic" herb. Newfygirl, it might be useful to do some research on exactly what that means. I know that ginseng is another adaptogenic herb; maybe that could lend some insights, too.
I've never read anything about it concerning dogs, though. Since it's already in the product LaminaSaver, I don't have much concern about using it for horses that aren't bred.

Well, I ordered some figuring it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. simply increasing the circulation to that area may help with things... (It was only $10 a lb on herbalhorse.com (or something like that). I need to find some pineapple extract - I can't remember what its called though - it starts with "bro" though. That is a good anti-inflammatory..

I had hip dysplaysia. At first I didn't even consider doing anything related to "nutrition" for it because it is a "bone problem" - bones aren't aligned / formed correctly. However, I then found out that because of the bad alignment, the cartilidge wears out faster than it can grow back at the pressure point(s). I would think that increasing blood flow might help with cartilige regrowth. Didn't help me for the long term, but nutrition & exercise gave me another couple of years.

You're thinking of bromelain.
Boswellia is a great one too. It's an anti-inflammatory, and while it takes some time to work, it's very effective over the long haul. No digestive problems, either.
Dorothy, that's an interesting thought, and it makes perfect sense.

I believe that the jiaogulan makes a difference for my dog. I feed in it conjunction with the Equine Recovery. I also believe that it made a difference in stiffness and freedom of movement for our old horse Tony. It is inexpensive--I think it is worth a trial. Linda

LOL! I looked up Boswellia and it said it has a sedative effect...Hmmm. A sedated Newf - probably be more comatose than usual!

MA, I spoke to the owner of HerbalHorse when someone asked about jia. for a foundered and possibly pregnant pony. He referred me to silverliningherbs.com/index.shtmlThese people say it is even safe for pregnant mares. because tt increases circulation by dilating the blood vessesl (vasodilator) and not by thinning the blood.

I dunno, Yip; I think I'd still be pretty chicken about it. Isoxuprine is a vasodilator too, but they always tell you to pull it before breeding.
I don't recall if Karen N had Harriott on jiaogulan when she was bred; does anyone remember?

I believe Karen pulled her off just in case. But I don't think that Wiggly is pregnant or expecting to get so. Linda
