I can now explain where I have been for the last few days and it aint pretty Big thank yous go out to my stupid great dane Rat for my nice 6 week vacation as he was kind enough to trip me and cause me to fall hard on my left leg on my nice slippery hardwood floors and end up fracturing my left femur. It would have been too simple to break it completely as they could have set it...no I have to fracture it so they can't do anything for me except tell me to go easy on it for the next 6 weeks (yeah that's gonna happen). Someone remind me again why I love my dogs *sigh* All isn't lost I suppose because I have taught my oldest son to do his own laundry since I can't get to the back porch where the washer and dryer are and Patrick is having to wait on me hand and foot but this sucks.

Yikes, Sarah! Geez, what a wreck! I always call my Corgis speedbumps, because they like to lie in doorways; but a Great Dane is a huge speedbump! How can you go easy on it and still get your chores done?? ?? Here's to a quick and uneventful recovery, girlfriend!

What! Your dog isn't outfitted with a "person-approaching- sensor"? We had one installed on our 65 pound model. When we approach, he beats his tail on the floor. He decided that being stepped on at night hurt so he came up with his own early-warning-device.
Talk to your dog--maybe you too can reach an agreement.
What a bummer! You didn't even get hurt doing something fun. Linda

Ouch, I have one of those lovelyspeed bumps too Whats worse than if they just lay there while you step over them? When they get up as you are stepping over them. Enjoy your time off as best you can and make them men do ALL your work.

Oh no! When I first saw the topic, I thought the dog had broken his leg- that would have been bad enough, but you broke yours! Auurrghhh! At least it happened in the winter and not the summer. We have a big 158 lb speedbump too...He doesn't move when he sees you coming so we just naturally get used to always stepping over dogs. In fact, I have stepped ON his leg - and he hasn't so much as yelped. (Newfs = very low energy). So sorry about your leg - but, enjoy your vacation!

You sound extremely frustrated. Are you sure you don't like being waited on hand and foot instead of doing the waiting? Yeah, me neither. Take it easy, best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I have decided that it is a doggie conspiracy to get me to stay inside with them more now. Not only do I have to watch out for Rat (dane) I now have 2 other speedbumps to avoid as Molly (pitt) and Odie (basset/beagle) have taken to either laying in the doorway or chasing each other under my feet when I try to move. Now if the cats follow their lead I'm going to end up in a body cast I think that I'm going to put large cow bells on everyones collars so I know exactly where they are before I move. It is hard to walk surrounded by a large, medium, and small walking hazzard and going anywhere by myself (bathroom for instance) no longer happens Here I thought I was safe when the kids actually stopped following me around now the dogs have taken over. If anyone would be interested in 3 rather used and completely annoying dogs let me know. I'm sure I can get UPS to deliver them ;D I'll even put up the first month of medical insurance for the new owner!

Yeah Marci, what's with that?? Dog is immobile. You approach. Dog flicks a whisker or an ear of acknowledgement. Your leg goes over, balance shifting to the spot on the other side of the dog. But before your foot hits the ground, dog suddenly scrambles to that spot your foot is aiming for! You might be lucky enough to catch yourself, but you're just as likely to splatter. Dog escapes unscathed, but looks at your heap of bones on the floor like "You tried to kill me!"

Sarah - WOW! I have a friend who tripped over a kid's toy several years ago. She ended up with surgery and screws which she still has.
Out of curiosity (due to my hip replacements), are you weight bearing? walker? crutches? Is the fracture sort of in the center or towards the hip or knee? How did you know that this was more serious than just a really bad fall with bruise?
At least you can spend lots of time here.

How did you know that this was more serious than just a really bad fall with bruise? Currently semi weight bearing with the help of a crutch or cane depending on where I am. The fracture was up tword the head of the femur... I broke down and went in for xrays (and pain killers) when I couldn't take it anymore well and Patrick got home from work to take me in...
