I was driving down a busy highway today and saw the car in front of me come to a stop, then the oncoming car come to a stop. They were stopping for a dog. A big, young GSD who was just standing in the middle of the road.
I debated about what to do. There were several houses nearby, but he had no collar, no id. Just standing there in the road. He clearly was watching for a certain car. Then he started following my car down teh highway!
I stopped and let him in. I debated about taking him home, but we really can't afford another mouth to feed now, especially after the Rocky debacle.
I ws within blocks of our chiro vet's office, so I took him there, thinking they may know him, he was so close by.
They didn't know who he was or who his people were, but took him and said they'd call the police to pick him up.
I feel so bad that he'll probably go to the shelter, but I couldn't leave him standing in the road. He was going to get hit or cause a car wreck.
Please pray that they find where this lovely dog belongs or that someone wants a dog like him.

Chris~ Who says you didn't do what is right? You did so much more by just picking this boy up and getting him out of harms way than many others would. I pray that his people do find him or new guardians show up that want him in their lives

you did right....at least he is alive and not laying on the side of the road. and if he nice enough to easily get into you car then he should be pretty adoptable.

Maybe he was meant to come home with you? I've been thinking about it ever since you posted about finding him. I think that if I had found him, I would keep him. Of course I actually am dog poor right now and I'm waiting for a dog that needs me to come along. I'm also really wanting another GS so he would have been just what I'm looking for. I'm not knocking you for not keeping him, no one can decide that but you. I've only got one old dog and it's kind of lonely around here.

I thought about that Hasha and I've been beating myself up for not bringing him home. But after our experience with Rocky, I just wasn't ready to bring a strange dog to our farm again...
And I just didn't want to get attached to another dog either...

Are you sure it's too late to get him? I know your a bit gun shy after what happened last time, but it might be worth it to give him a chance. It seems like every stray that I've taken in apreciated it so much, they ended up being the best pets.

That stuff always makes a person feel terrible. Think of the car accident and pain you may well have prevented though. You did the right thing AND you also need to take care of yourself. If a new dog isn't what you need right now, you did the best you could for him.

p.s. my dad was about the grouchiest man ever, but he brought home every stray and hard luck case you ever saw. As my mom said, she never "wanted" a dog or cat but usually had about 3-5 of 'em

Hasha, I'll call about him if you want to come get him. My platter is full with all the animals I can take care of right now.

dog ever had. Even if the worst happens, at least he won't be freezing, hurt, hungry, and alone, dying without a kind word. Also, he could have caused a wreck that may have cost human lives as well as his own. I guess one of the saddest rules there is is- you can't save them all. Please don't grieve. You are my hero.

I called the vet's office today. The vet tech said they kept the dog for 2 days and no one called about him. They sent him on to the BEST pet shelter around. I'm not sure if it's a no kill shelter, but I do know it has a very good reputation for doing the best it can for pets. I know quite a few people who go there to adopt pets.
It's also the first place people call if they lose a pet, so I'm hoping this will give him a good chance to find his people or find some new people.
i think you are right FrostyM.. I've saved lots of horses and dogs and cats and even our goats were critters that needed a new home. I can't take in all of them.

Chris, I hope that I didn't make you feel bad for not keeping him. That was not my intention at all, I just thought that maybe he was put in your way for a reason. If you were closer I would probably go and get him, but it's much to far for me to go. I'm the ultimate home body and rarely go more than 100 miles away from home.
