I will update you all.
As you remember Shadow got sick the end of may, well that passed and she got better. Kerry got some alfalfa hay in because she had dropped so much weight. Its really rich hay too. She got back up to weight and I was starting to drop the levels of how much I was giving her since its a knife edge with a previously foundered horse. She needed a trim before I left for my brothers wedding in California. I thought I would do it when I got back so I didn't mess up my back before when i didn't have access to my chiropractor.
Well when I got back she was FAT and the lady said she had been free feeding her the alfalfa. And she was getting sore footed. I cringed when I saw her and hoped. Got my tools out but dang her hoof walls were too tough for my nippers so I did what I could and thought I would finish the next day....well overnight she got worse. I did get her fronts done but the backs were beyond me, plus in trimming her I pulled a muscle in my back. I called my friend who has my farrier for years and had her finish her and touch up. I was wondering if it was Shadows time. I had saved up enough to actually pay for the deed when its time.
But my friend watched her for a while and said no shes not given up. give her some time. So I did. It took 2 weeks for the pain to start subsiding so she walked normal again. Tried the potato trick and it helped. But in all that time she never lay down. She dropped weight and the pain killers barely touched it. But they did help.
Slowly she has gotten better but her left fore is pretty bad. I trim her weekly and she got sore again last week, I thought abscess! So once more she was treated to the ground up raw potato in a boot. On day two she walked sound and the boot smelled NASTY. On the last trim I started seeing the blood from all the founder as its growing out, and also the spot where the abscess blew out the bottom.
She is retired permanently now as I don't think she will ever be ridable now. Such a bummer as I was thinking before all this started that I might do some arena work with her. But Kerry has lots of horses to ride, though I haven't ridden in a year. LOL Well except my bike. Yes i ride a bike now twice a week with a group. We do an 11 mile round trip and its a blast. Not quite as fun as riding a horse but it also doesn't hurt my joints as much. My knees have gotten strong enough to not use any wraps or anything. My thighs no longer jiggle as I walk either.
Life is pretty good, I have my own apartment as of last December. Its so nice to have my own place again. It gets lonely sometimes but its just a loneliness for one person, and well that's isn't going to go away. I have learned to live with it. The only thing I miss about Kerrys house is the yard, I have to walk the dogs to potty. I really don't miss the constant noise. But it was needed during my healing time. I think I would have gone bonkers if I had lived alone right after Mark died.
The dogs are great, though jazz is showing her age. Enough so to make me wonder if she was older than the 2 1/2 years old when I adopted her. For a small dog she seems older than the 12 she is supposed to be. And her eyes are cloudy, and her hearing is failing also. But she still is a chow hound and loves her pets, and can jump into the van still. Toby is a delight, always doing something to make me giggle.
Oh yeah I got a new car a couple months ago, well new to me. The caddy was having problems with the check transmission light coming on but before I could get it in the light would go off. It sounded the same. Well finally the light came on just as I was going past and I pulled in and he put it on the scope. turned out it was a switch deep in the tranny that was going out. it didn't effect the workings of the tranny just the gas mileage. (Kind of explains why it got decent gas mileage for such a huge engine) and it wasn't going to break down on me soon from that but it was 1500 to fix. Well its not worth fixing.
I had been thinking of what I wanted next in a car for well years. I wanted a van, one that if I wanted to I could throw a bed in the back and camp in it. No tent needed. I asked my Mechanic what small van did he suggest, his first choice was Dodge Caravan. Next he liked the fords.
The nest day I checked Craigslist as I had been doing and when I hit refresh there was a Dodge Caravan, in town, for a price I could afford. I will tell you in a minute where I got the cash. I drove out to see it and fell in love it was low miles, and a nice looking van and my mechanic had changed the oil in it a month before so he knew the car. And it was dark Purple yeah not important but I LOVE purple. Its not an obnoxious purple but looks blue until its in the sun then you can see the red flakes of glitter in the paint. I LOVE IT!! The dogs love it. Well a week goes by and I think well I better get the caddy cleaned up to sell and tried to start it to move it around so i could vacuum it out and it had a dead battery. Sigh, so called my mechanic and he came out gave me a jump and I took it in and put in a new battery. He offered to take the car and sell it for me, I thought I could do it myself. Well the next morning it wouldn't start again. So I once more had him come jump it and said to him I will take up up on your offer to get her running and sell her. (she still has a good 50000 before the tranny will be a real problem.) So I took him up on his offer. I owed him about 500 at the time. it took a month for him to figure out why it won't start first thing in the morning. Once started its fine. Its just that cold start at the start of the day. Grrrr....
I haven't seen it for a few days out front so I think it might be gone, what is left after the bill will go towards repairs on the new car-if needed. It does need tires. and tonight I noticed a headlight is out. But I still love it, the extra room, barn stuff in the very back keeps the car cleaner. And the hatch acts as a roof while I change into my barn shoes. It doesn't ride as nice as the Caddy but it also doesn't cost as much to fill. Caddy had to have premium gas at 20 cents more a gallon. Parts are cheaper also. All in all i think a good move.
Now as to how I got the spare cash to buy Dark Purple as I have dubbed her. I was on facebook one day and someone posted a link to the Oregon Unclaimed funds. For a lark I put my husbands name in there and OMG it came up they had over 100 to claim for him. Knock me over with a feather. Well i sent all the paperwork necessary to claim it and thinking it would be 101.00 but hoping for more like 3500 so I could get a van. When the check came it was 3600. Turned out to be an old insurance policy Mark had. I had moved and changed my number so they had no way to find me. Kind of bittersweet though, But it makes me smile to think he actually had a hand in my life still 4 years later. It was sure a Godsend to me.
And that is about caught up with my life, and where Shadow is.
Oh and my laptop is fixed. My older brother who works on all the kids at the school where he works wanted all the photos off of it, it had been down for about 8 months. Virus or adware most likely. Well I sent it to him and he not only put in a new hard drive but all my photos are reloaded. Its like a new computer in the old ones body. And he charged me a hug at Christmas! LOL I have great brothers....Oh wait there is more news on that front...better put it in another message though. LOL
