He has ADR this morning so he will be coming along to camp with the riding horses so I can keep an eye on him. Nice that it is an AERC ride so there will be vets on site although I think Grey is mostly having issues with chewing hay now and our pasture is dried up. I might need to get him to an equine dental specialist and/or see if he'll go for soaked hay cubes/pellets going forward and he won't get to live with Shade anymore if he needs more special diet than just eating a few lbs of soaked equine senior twice a day.
Spoiled old brat making me worry.

Oh yeah, they are good to make us worry. Hope he is fine. When the vet looked at Shadows teeth they were fine, but short. And yeah she was having trouble with the tough hay. There is always beet pulp and senior feeds. Of course soaked.

Grey is down to gum the last couple inches of molar for a year or so now. I guess he had been getting quite a bit from grass we had but its pretty well eaten up and dried out now. He tucked right into his soaked senior so it looks like his discomfort signals when I gave hay were mostly "hungry but I can hardly chew this" Time for him to get soaked hay cubes/pellets and eat by himself I guess. I've been pushing it back with just separate SR for him cuz he and Shade are such good buddies but I'm sure they'll adjust.

you can also do some soaked beet pulp. They can still visit each other a lot - maybe spend the night together and be separated during the day type thing. If you can figure out a way that there can just be a gate between their pens / pastures, then anyone can go out and open the gate mid-day, etc.

Stanley makes grass pellets, as well as alfalfa pellets, from Idaho grass and alfalfa. The grass pellets are heavy in timothy, which is always a good choice for horses. I also used to gi e Tony a flake of leafy alfalfa each day, then throw the stems over the fence for the others to clean up.

Shadow has very little teeth left too and hates anything wetted down like the hay cubes. He eats purina senior, nutrena, and chopped hay. The chopped hay is a great option for him and gives him hay to eat after his feed his gone (he is separated from the mares at night.) he does eat on the round bale and graze but all he really does is quid it

Poor old guy. It is so nice that there are actually choices that you can try and see what works best for him. Back even just 20 years ago, there were just a couple of options. I really really love all the research and care that goes into keeping our oldies going for as long as possible.
