Choke

Rose choked when I had her for only 2 weeks. I thought my brand new love was going to die. Same scenario, vet came after about 90 mins, tubed, Matt actually pumped the water. There was blood...more blood than I had ever seen in my life. Axe murder comes to mind. The spot on the ground was there for months. We settled her in her stall afterwards, and the stall became a bloody mess. It was scary. She had 5-7 days a/b and was fine. The food clump irritated her throat though, and she coughed for some time till it all healed. She had several self-resolving chokes in the years after that, so I wonder if the first one produced scar tissue. I never left her alone to eat after the second one, always waited till she was finished & ok. Talk about a vet bill, whoo-doggies! Ours was on Easter night, like double overtime.

I've never heard of Dr. Jorth. Where is his practice? Or do you mean Dr. George?
I did call Dr. George's practice but they don't have a scope. He was supposed to call me back on the 8th but I still haven't heard from him. I actually called them even though I swore in 1995 I'd never go back there; I was that desperate.
After reading Yip's post, I'm feeling a bit better. I did hear him cough on Tuesday but it wasn't as bad as it had been. We will continue to monitor him and when Dr. H does come out for his checkup (and shots for both), we'll see how he's doing then.
I'm also going to buy a couple small buckets so that we can start soaking both horses' meals. The farrier and his wife were telling me the experience they had with choke; theirs was 10x worse than what Taz had and they ended up losing their horse. Ever since then, they soak ALL their horses' feed because they never want to go through that again.

BTW, I've now had 2 offers of "you can use our trailer if you need to" from some wonderful, wonderful people.

Well, I think the cough was residual. He hasn't been coughing at all lately! I'm still having the vet out Monday to check him out and give the horses their vaccinations but I'm pretty happy that the cough is gone!
We are now soaking both horses' feed and they happily slurp up the slurry.
