Took this last night when I unwrapped my boy. It is 8 days post surgery and looking pretty dried up and toughened. I opted not to wrap him again and dosed him with Underwoods and baking powder and turned him out in the smaller side pen. He was getting pretty wound up in confinement and had moved around enough to dislodge the multiple layers of industrial strength duct tape and diaper almost completely so he must have been pretty agitated during the day. It started raining last night and might rain on and off all week so he will be up to his eyeballs in mud but I think it is far enough along to be fine. Trying pics again...

That looks a whole lot better than I would have ever figured! I really like the Underwood's. That's good stuff.
Do you see any vestige of coronet band above it?

No MA I believe the vet took the coronary band and all. The material to the right of the wound appears to be "hoof type" material. Like his hoof had decided to fix itself and regrow without the extra part that was removed. I know the vet was surprised at what he found too, he was expecting to leave a larger wound. I really wish I could have been there to watch the surgery. I'll try to clean it off tonight and take new pics.

Maybe you've already answered this and I didn't get it - it looks like the coronet band on the right is much higher than on the left. On an uninjured horse, this often means "sheared heel", but in this case, is it just because part of the coronet band has been removed? How does the hoof wall grow without the coronet band?
Just wondering - trying to learn more about hooves.

I think it is partially from the injury and partially what has been removed. I believe it will get more "normal" as the hoof remodels and heals. It will most likely always be a little higher since the back edge of his hoof is effectively moved forward about 2 inches. It also might be a little but of an optical illusion due to the angle of the pic. I didn't get a chance to take new pics last night but will try to get one from the back with his foot on the ground and some other angles when I have a chance.

Thanks - I didn't take into account that it could just be the angle of the photo.
