Since my farrier is in Alaska, I decided to put Fuerza in boots and start the riding season. Spring is a great time for boots anyway. If it gets rainy, I'm not wasting shoes. As I dug her boots out, I found a BRAND NEW, never used pair of Old Mac's G-2. I don't even remember ever ordering them. So, she has three pairs of boots. I am in business! She has been trimmed up and has been cleaned up a couple of times. Let the riding season begin! Plum has great feet and should be able to go barefoot as long as I don't trim too much on her feet. I am going to leave that extra wall for protection. I still need to remove more sole from Fuerza's front feet. The hind feet shed their sole, but the front haven't. I think I will put her in ground-up raw potatoes tomorrow afternoon and then trim at sole out on Wednesday morning.

Wow, what a bonus! I love doing my own trims and using boots - I can keep the angles pretty consistent, and I'm not dependent on the farrier if my horse should lose or mangle a shoe just before I plan a ride And my former trimmer is happy to help by phone or email if I have a question, so I'm not totally on my own.

I am very glad that I have the skill, the tools and the knowledge to do it. But I will be very glad when Ron shows up to put on shoes.

Howie funny to forget new boots. Course after moving I found a lot of stuff I didn't remember and some I swore I already had but never found. I found when trimming if you don't touch the sole in front of the frog, just let it get thick and carry some of the weight they don't get as ouchy in the spring. But feet that are soft and hard stone or blacktop can make them a bit sore. Better yet, trim as you ride. LOL IF THEY aren't too long you can ride on hard ground and save your back. Get home and just need to touch up. I like to cheat that way. I am really thinking of taking Shadow out of her retirement even if it's just to plunk around the barn. She is doing so well, blowing coat like a samoyed dog. When she is done is beauty treatment time and pictures.

I have been really lucky with Sam's feet this winter, we rode enough to help him stay self trimmed, of course we couldn't ride the rocky trails but we made use of the pea gravel groomed trails. Shoes next month! WooHoo! I would love to find a brand new pair of boots! Has anyone heard anything about Old Mac's new Scoot Boots?
