My stepdad had a Dr appt and they had some other errands to run so they left their house about 10 am Monday. When they got back home at a little after 6 there was a car parked on the highway in front of their mailbox, across the road from their driveway. They live on a pretty busy state HWY - the house is not far from the road up on a little hill. It's about 2 miles from a little town of 300 and 5 miles from a town of 1400. When they went into the house and noticed that the windows on their 3 season porch were steamed up and that usually only happens when the door is open. About the time they got in the house they noticed a guy walking up the driveway from that car. He told them he had run out of gas and wondered if they had a gas can and could give him a ride to the station. My stepdad obliged and my mom went in the house. She soon noticed that her iPad and Kindle were missing from the counter. About that time stepdad and the guy got back and she called stepdad on his cell while he was helping put gas in the car to tell him. At first he told her she probably misplaced it but she insisted that it had been on the counter. He looked in the car as best he could in the dark and couldn't see anything but did make note of the license plate number before the guy left. Meanwhile mom looked around the house and discovered other missing things, stepdad's watch, some prescription pain killers, a jar of 50 cent pieces that she kept on top of her mirrored dresser in her bedroom, etc. They also discovered that the side door to the 3 season porch was not locked and was ajar. They called the cops and gave them the info. Turns out the car was registered to someone with the same name that this guy had given them but the description didn't match - this was a tall thin white man when it was supposed to be black man. Stepdad said the guy did act super nervous. He thought about trying to keep him there after mom's call but was concerned he might have a weapon or do something else crazy.
SO this guy apparently ran out of gas and since no one was home he decided to help himself to whatever he could find while he was there. I suppose he figured he would see them if they came in and would get back out on the porch quick enough to tell them he had just run out of gas. I drove by their place on my way home at 5:15 and noticed the car sitting on the road but didn't notice if anyone was in it, a coworker of mine drove by at 5:45 and said absolutely that no one was in the car at that time and he also didn't see any lights on in the house. We were robbed in a similar manor back in 2005 when we lived around the corner from this place. Hubby happened to drive by while the robbery was in progress and followed the car as he called the cops. We got all our stuff back and the guy did get caught about a week later but I remember that really eery violated feeling of knowing someone was rummaging around in your house.
