I need some help / advice please. Some time ago a few of you did some DNA testing on your dogs to see what all was in their backgrounds. My brother is wanting to do this with his GS mix. What test did you use and how much do should they run?
Pets Mart has one on the market for $60

Don't do it. It's a waste of money. I did Nick & Rosie. It said Rosie was Boxer, Bulldog, Irish Setter & Lab It said Nick was Bull Terrier, Italian Greyhound, American Eskimo Dog, Boxer, Chihuahua & Bernese Mtn. Dog. I haven't bothered to waste the money on Frankie, she will remain a Mystery Mutt.
There are videos on you tube of people having their purebred dogs tested that come back as nothing close to what the dog actually is. The ONLY thing I would use DNA for is to verify parentage.

We did it on all our dogs, and all came out with things we can recognize in part. They have been refining the process as they go. We had great luck and enjoyed seeing the results and would do it again. We used the BioVet, but I think it was called, but found the Wisdom panel to be a little more accurate seeming, and had a greater range of breeds. If it's something your brother wants to do, it's not terribly expensive. Haters be hatin', but it worked great for us. (sorry to bust back in but I was called back from afar to address this since we've had great luck with it. I will go far far away again now, buh-bye!)

My friend did this with her rescue dog. The results were surprising, but, once we took a step back, we think it made sense. The problem is that some mutts are REALLY mutts ... with so much heritage variation the way they "look" may not always fit their genetics. My friend still thought it was fun and was glad she did it.

Thanks for the info. Don't do it. It's a waste of money. The ONLY thing I would use DNA for is to verify parentage. It's OK Kit. My brother is starting to obsess over it. If it fixes what ever need to know he has then this will be one of his Christmas gifts.
