Brought this guy home today www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoUnGhfiM_ELast weekend I was at a ride in Sturgis SD, It was not as cool as I'd hoped it would be in Sept. but not as hot as when it was held at the end of July. I invited Dad and Sis to come camp out and trail ride while I was there. We had to go to a funeral in Minot ND so Razz and Sadie had to go to Bowman and hang out for a couple days and then have a long trailer ride home on Wed. Sadie was kind of sucked up in Bowman with chilly weather but I figured she'd bounce back once at home and she was eating and looking good Thursday morning but we had a cold front that evening and Friday she had a mild colic bout so Dr Mike came out. Sadie is all over her tummy ache since treatment but she had a couple of raw spots on her gums. Looked more like she'd been fighting a bit then VS, but Dr Mike has a case just 1.5 mile east of us and I use an S-hack, no bit so its suspicious and the state will run blood tests. I was debating on not bringing the gelding home, but Sadie, nor any of the others has shown any typical symptoms and the seller was sounding like it would be really hard for her to set up to board him in Cheyenne (they sold their horse property and all horse stuff) so I decided to just get him today. Please send prayers or vibes that he and all the horses here will be OK and at worst we'll be under quarantine for month or so.

Yup, 4 year old arab gelding. His Dam was a good 100 mile horse and I've been hearing about other horses from the sire doing well in endurance. I love Sadie but IMO she is not going to be super tough physically and all the rides are at least 2 days if not more and a pretty good drive to get to so I've kind of been watching CL and FB forum ads.
This guy was on the F/C and WY CL. I never would have bought him from the breeder cuz I've never been super gung-ho where I felt like I needed a top prospect but he actually is one from his breeding and how he moves and I am excited to get myself into real riding shape and see if I can do the Big Horn 100 in a couple years when he is 6 or 7. I've wanted to do it since I started endurance and saw someone with the top ten blanket at one of my first rides I went to. I'm so crowd phobic that Tevis does not have actually have as much appeal for me.

He's gorgeous and looks smooth and coordinated. Have you ridden him yet? What are his gaits like.
I hope your problems turn out okay but I'm confused. What does this sentence mean "... she'd been fighting a bit then VS, but Dr Mike has a case just 1.5 mile east of us and I use an S-hack, no bit so its suspicious and the state will run blood tests."
Congrats on even considering a 100 miler. Wow!

I did a test ride Sep 4 before putting a deposit on him and I could feel those nice gaits in the saddle. VS is a fly spread disease --Vesticular Stomitis sp? that causes sores in horses mouths and sometimes on their coronary bands or in their ears. They quarantine mostly because cows can also get vs and it looks like hoof and mouth. Horses don't get hoof and mouth.

R4F, something else that comes to mind on the ulcers is certain weeds in the hay. We have something here called cheat grass, and it has little barbs on the seed heads that can cause ulcers in the mouth and tongue. Just something to throw in the mix. I'm sure hoping there's no hoof and mouth in the area.
Your new guy looks like a pretty mover. Are there any other videos? This one was just left canter, and I'd sure like to see the other direction and the trot.

Stupid bureaucrat state/fed vets have not even called me yet to set a time to check Sadie. I don't think she did have VS as she has been fine since and all the other horses have been too but I'd like to get an official 'clear' before even riding out down the utility roads and its been extra busy for me just feeding everyone with keeping both Sadie and the new gelding separated from other horses.
He is such a nice boy. I'm glad I brought him home since I now don't think there is much risk of him getting VS and he had a little puncture wound on his fetlock when I picked him up and it was swollen. The friend who had him for the seller said she'd put "10%" iodine on it "but he wouldn't let me pick off the scab". I don't think you can even buy it that strong but my vet always has me dilute even the 1% solution quite a bit. I've been putting bag balm on it and after the first day when he was probably expecting nasty stinging Tanza has been so good for me. The swelling also cleared up Ts first day home, it may have been as much reaction to the iodine as anything. Tanza just stands and eats his pellets and lets me put the salve on, even in the dark with a headlamp on during the week when I was working and getting home late. I'll probably try to take my first ride on him here at home tomorrow, he's starting to get a bit bored so even just dinking in our 1/2 size arena will be a bit of stimulation for him.

Tanza is like me. He didn't like being in the dinky arena. Tuesday I rode him in Grey and Shade's pen while they had their feed outside and he was back to using his nice long stride walk and trot. I'm not pushing for canter yet. Last night I came home and Dad announced our water pump had quit so I won't ride today, might end up shuffling horses to get Sadie (who has been cleared from VS scare YAY) and Tanza access to the big water tanks -- if the big tanks have water.
